First of all, we aren't as bad as we are showing right now. Our defense will get more than the 4 sacks they are on pace for this year, T'hill is not a bottom 5 QB is this league, and Miller didn't all of a sudden start to suck. There are some tweeks we can make on each side of the ball to get some of the Swag back that we are sorely missing. Here are some things I would change:
1) More balanced play calling on offense early on:
- The big thing I see right now is that defenses are just able to pin their ears back and full out blitz every play because they know we aren't going to run. There was a play against the Jet's where Buster Skrine literally blited on 3 plays in a row, he went unblocked 3 plays in a row, and hit the QB all 3 times.
- Let Miller get going early, call a few HB draws, bring in 2 TE's to block, and use our athletic offensive line to start pulling a bit.
- Sometimes i feel like Lazor has just played to much Madden football and wants to chuck the pigskin on every throw.
2) The offensive line isn't as crappy as they are playing right now
- Yeah I know I know, Dallas Thomas belongs in Pee-wee football, our guard play is terrible,etc...... This isn't the type of offensive line that is good enough to block for 50 passes a day, but they can be far more effective.
- If we start committing to the run and drop T'hill down to 30 passes a game it will cause the defense to be more honest. They won't be able to just bull rush every play and blow up our line because they will have to worry about Miller getting to the 2nd level then.
- New England has 2 rookie guards and they make it work every year because they simpilify things for a young offensive line. They try to bring a balanced attack early so defenses can't just rush the QB every single play. It really is amazing what a balanced offense can do for it's performance
3) Play the proper players in the proper spots
- Brice Mccain is not a boundary CB, he never has been in his entire career, so stop trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Put this guy in the slot where he can thrive and have Taylor and Bowman on the boundary until Grimes is healthy and than have it be Grimes and Taylor.
- I don't like Misi on the outside in a 3 lb system, play more 5-2 technique and have Jenkins and Misi as the LB's. This worked quite well last year, not sure why we got away from it
- I like Aikens and think he will be a player but right now Michael Thomas is better and needs to be the starting safety alongside Jones.
- Put in Billy Turner at RG. Yes he struggles in pass protection, but so does the rest of the offensive line. He is a stud running blocker though and that is what we need to get back to. A right side of Pouncey-Turner-James, would be a nice side of the line for Miller to run to.
- More Jordan Phillips please, i will go crazy if he doesn't play meaningful snaps the rest of the year, he has been good
4)Defensive scheme is the reason our D-line is so unproductive
- I don't why we are running so much 2-gap technique right now and over-complicating this crap for our bulls. Change this back to a one gap immediately and let these guys bull rush. I do blame the defensive line issues almost fully on Coyle because the 2 gap clearly isn't working and yet he keeps trying it. It's not what these guys are good at, and if an amateur like me can figure it out, then why can't the staff.
I know it looks bad right now guys, but a more balanced offense and change the d-line back to a one gap system with some minor personal changes will fix a lot of the issues we are having right now.
