Dan Pompei answering a Jest fan on why CP isn't "washed up"

Q: How has Chad Pennington been so good for Miami? He was washed up when we let him go up here.
Wayne Roberts, Hackensack, N.J.

A: I don’t think anyone who studied Pennington thought he was “washed up.” The issues with Pennington were arm strength and durability.
He is responding to good coaching and playing as well as he had in other spurts of his career. Now if Pennington can keep playing this well over a long period of time, I think a lot of NFL evaluators will be surprised.

Talk about doling out a begrudging compliment while inferring his performance is more an anomoly than expectation.

Would love to see Penny make the pro bowl ans shut up many. Would be even better to have Penny Qb this team to the super bowl within the next couple years.

I think anything neagtive Pennington gets he's earned, just like anything positive he gets he's earned. Chads career is exactly that, both good and bad and those that grade him will reamin sceptical probably till the day he retires. I think Chad will lets us down in the end, but I think it will be as much because of our other deficiencies as it will be Chad's weaknesses. He was a terrific pick up especially as late as we got him and for the price, but I just don't think Chad will be out answer, this year or any other. But Chad getting us back to respectable is more then acceptable for me.

You are right he has earned the positvies and the negatives but I dont agree with you that he will fail us at the end. If Penny stays healthy he is a top tear Qb, and when healthy he always has been. Penny's durability will dictate his success.

I thought that was a fair take on Pennington. durability and being fully rehabilitated have been the two big question that have always hung over his head after having back to back rotor cup injuries. We have got him at a time in his career when he is the most healed and closest to his original condtion then he has ever been before. He was never known for having a big strong arm, Parcells went after him in the draft because he liked his managment skills. We are reaping the benefits of a experienced qb who is close to if not fully healed and still in his prime. Penny probally has a good 4 yrs of play left in him as long as our line can keep him on his feet and he dosnt suffer yet another injury. The Jets logic in cutting him is so debatable it baffles my mind.

On one hand they let a very good starter QB go without even getting a draft pick On the other hand thier rookie QB who has sat behind Pennington gets to sit behind Farve now. They may be grooming another hall of famer if this kid can take the best part of both thier games and make that his game. I froget the second string QB's name on the jets but could you imagine the monster QB they could be creating there? I hope it dosnt unfold that way but they could be creating an accurate cerbal game mangment gunslinger who is going to absolutly change the history books at the QB postion.

I agree 100%. That was a great drive to close out Denver, however in all of our wins, except the San Diego game, we were a +2 in turnovers. The San Diego game we didn't score the second half. Can our D continue to do this? I hope so. I would not want to have to play from behind having to score a lot of points with Penny.

I also agree that our defense has been the unsung heroes in our victories. The offense has been doing its job putting enough points up on the board to win games and deserve props for that, but our defense has been keeping our offense on the field and been making big plays at crucial points of the games. I have been very happy with our line and our linebackers play. They are keeping the pressure off of our secondary which is crucial. We have been dominating the lines on both sides of the ball most of this season.

That jests fan said Penny was washed up? Hmmmm...I seem to remember before Favre got there Penny won the starting QB position in training camp this year.:err:

Sorry, I just don't see it. There have been several games this year where Chad has had some less then impressive outtings. Throwing the ball badly. Not due to pressure or mis-communication, just plain awful throws. I think the further along we get especially if we somehow sneak into the playoffs the competition will get better and Chad's mistakes will be magnified.

I have no problem with this cause we weren't going to have a strong year out of the QB had Chad been here or not, so having his experience and talent has made us a team that competes that's a plus. However, don't forget the Jets gave up on him not just because of the lack of arm strength, but his inability to get them over the hump.

IMO, we weren't as bad as our record showed last year it's part of the reason why we are better this year then people expected. Chad of course only helps, but he has his limits. That's all I'm sayin, maybe Chad doesn't let us down, if he doesn't you can bet I'll be the first one to step up and say I was wrong, I just think it will be a 16 game season for us, I'm just hoping for a 500. record.

I've been so impressed that he's, for the most part, been able to finish every game with a clean jersey. I don't think we have much to worry about as far as an injury happening, at least that's my hope. There's been games where he's been able to stand there with the ball for more than four seconds.

Something just occured to me. I wonder if cold weather games are going to aggrivate his past injuries. In NY he played in the cold more often obvisiously but it could also account for some of the early sucesses he has shown here so far. We are just getting into the weather change and I will be curious to see if we see any decline in his play in outdoor away games from this point on?

LOL, again we agree and dissagree on some points, Penny has not played well in some games, no doubt, but I will use last game as an example, he was off most of the game, but came through in the clutch. I just believe Penny is a much better Qb than many give him credit for. We both agree on, from what I have read on some of your other posts, is that Penny now is the best thing for this team and if he does fail us because of physical limitations he is the best mentor for Henne. IMO though I just dont think that Henne's time will come anytime soon.
