This is just in case any of you think Brees wouldn't be a HUGE upgrade over Gus Frerotte.

2005 Regular Season:

Frerotte: (Ranked 28th in the NFL)
YDS: 2996
ATT: 494
CMP: 257
CMP%: 52.0%
TD: 18
INT: 13
Passer Rating: 71.9

Brees: (Ranked 10th in the NFL)
YDS: 3576
ATT: 500
CMP: 323
CMP%: 64.6%
TD: 24
INT: 15
Passer Rating: 89.2

*Both QB's played in 16 games.
*Brees was sacked 27 times.
*Frerotte was sacked 26 times.

Also, both have similar offensive weapons. You could even make the case that Frerotte had more to work with than Brees.

Brees:
Gates
Tomlinson
McCardell

Frerotte:
McMichael
Brown/Williams
Chambers

I really don't understand why Gus supporters say they are comparable. I'll take a 64% completion over 52% any day. Also more td's for Brees because he frankly was able to string some drives together (due to completing more passes per attempt).
I know Gus fans say he had LT. But Ricky and Ronnie is not exactly a crapbox backfield.

I think the deciding X-factor which seperates who had a better supporting cast is all on the OFFENSIVE LINE.

While you're comparing, check this out...

Gus Frerotte's passer rating on 3rd down in 2005: 56.2

Drew Brees passer rating on 3rd down: 96.9 (102.9 in 2004)

This is a huge difference... Brees moves the chains....

The Chargers had a worse O-Line than the Dolphins last year. They fired their O-Line coach after the season was over.

Are you sure? Did he play in that debacle against the Browns? I know Sage started.

I'm sure. Frerotte actually had more passing yards than Sage in that game. Gus had 53 yards passing.

Don't forget that Drew didn't have a red zone weapon for 4 games because Gates and management could'nt get a deal done. The offense really stalled out in those games when they got close to the end zone.

Not sure what case you're trying to make, but here's what I see:

10th in NFL vs 28th
12.6% better completion percentage
6 more touchdowns
(those last 2 stats put us in the playoffs, don't ya think?)

I'm not a Gus hater and if he ends up starting next year, it wouldn't be the end of the world providing we had our future qb onboard (Cutler, a rehabbing Brees/Culpepper). But c'mon, Brees is clearly far better if he's healthy.

The principle issue with Frerotte last year was inaccuracy. So many games would not have been as close or we would have had a better shot at winning with some accurate completions. Consider how many drives ended b/c of numerous inaccurate passes.

The 64% to 52% is a very significant number! At 500 pass attempts, it's 70-75 completions. Over the course of 16 games, that's 4.5+ completions a game more on the same number of passes.

At the same time, Frerotte is costing us $4.5 million this year. We can release him and even if Brees signs a big bonus, with it pro-rated, we can get him in at close to that number this year, perhaps a million higher - capwise.

Frerotte will be dumped or asked to renegotiate a much lower number assuming we got a guy like a Brees or Culpepper.

That's exactly the case I was trying to make. I just wanted everybody to know that Brees is clearly an upgrade over Gus.
