From Pro Football Weekly:
Positives: Looked like he had an NFL future at the end of the ’98 season. Looked poised and was throwing the ball better than he ever had. Showed a nice, quick, compact delivery and release. Was accurate at almost all ranges. Made good decisions. Showed nice touch when he threw fade routes and some zip on his fastball when he needed to gun the ball. Threw for 1,646 yards and 13 scores on third down, if you include the bowl game. Negatives: On the lean side and does not have a big frame. Looked like a totally different player in ’99. Got beaten up badly early on and played hurt most of the year. Developed bad habits. Instead of stepping into his throws, he threw falling away from the line. Bird-dogged primary receivers and forced the ball. Lost his accuracy and confidence. Never had a big arm, but arm strength was not a concern until this year.

Summary: Totally different player in ’98 than in ’99. Needs to break the bad habits he developed in ’99, regain his confidence and get back to where he was in ’98, when he looked like another Oliver Luck. Bulger may not be drafted because he played so poorly in ’99, but he would be a mid-round pick off what he did in ’98.

Mueller drafted this guy in the sixth round, while several scouts thought he wouldn't be drafted at all. 69 TD's, 11,700 yards and a few pro bowls later, that looks like a good pick to me. Some argue that Bulger's stats are a result of the offense he plays in and I think that's true, to a degree. Without Bulger the team has struggled to make plays in the passing game and depended heavily on Stephen Jackson.
What I'm trying to say is this: Mueller made a great pick in the sixth round with this kid, and it wasn't really a fluke because he has a long list of 'under the radar' players he's drafted that have gone on to be great players. Maybe we won't draft Leinart or Vince Young or Brady Quinn. Maybe we'll go BPA early in the draft only to find a hidden gem in the later rounds.

I'm not laughing because I think what you posted was ludicrous. I'm just getting all giddy about the 06 draft.

What he says is true. There is a strong possibility that they wont go after a QB until after the second round. This year though, the pickings are slim.

I don't feel like getting into an arguement over the merits of non-1st rnd QB's over top pick QB's with some of the guys on this site again, but I will say this: I trust Mueller, and I agree with this line of thinking.

I don't like the idea of trusting the future of the franchise on a hidden gem. Anyways Saban has final say right? So that would basically make Mueller a glorified scout.

He needs to find us the next chad johnson so we have a legit #1 reciever.

I dont think Nick would ever invest 1st rd money in a qb. As Ive posted before its inefficient use of the salary cap. QB's need to be groomed and babied for the first few years, much of which is spent on the bench. And you commit all that money, the big signing bonus and contract, to a 1st rd pick thats not going to really contribute for another 2 years. A 1st round pick has to be an impact player that helps now and unless there's a Peyton Manning available, which there isnt, then you have to go with best player available.

Why is everyone so obsesed with waiting another 45 years to find a "hidden gem"? Lets just give what we need and get out franchise QB NOW. Most of the starters in the league now were picked in the 1st or 2nd round.

Why do you think that they need to be groomed for 2 or 3 years? That doesnt teach them anything. Let them learn the offence for a few weeks, then throw them out there (like Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Ben Rothlisbergr (because of injury)

Would you guys really be happy with an Aaron Brooks or a Marc Bulger as our QB of the future? I don't think I would. Brooks is Vick without the running ability, and I think Bulger is a good quarterback, but benefits from some pretty potent weapons. Late round "Gems" at QB usually tend to be serviceable quarterbacks, not the franchise type I would think Saban wants to build around. There aren't too many late round franchise quarterbacks that made it big.

Totally agree..."late round gems" are great to fall into...they make good trade bait later on.

Exactly my point. Most great frachise QBs are 1st rounders. Brady is obviously an exeption, but he is a 1 in a million find. Not something we can plan on easily finding

I agree, Leinart is ready to go.
