VG read on Tannehill with likely more info than you want to know from PFF.

Positives

• Graded at +12.1 on second down.
• Ranked third with +8.0 grade on passes thrown in 11-to-20-yard range.
• Despite perception, graded at +2.7 on passes thrown at least 30 yards in the air.
• Showed good improvement throwing the ball in between the numbers (+15.0).
• Graded at +9.1 on passes outside the numbers to the right.
• Among the league’s best when throwing from a clean pocket (+20.5).
• Graded at +7.7 against third-down blitzes.
• Ranked fourth with a +16.3 on 7-to-8-yard drop-backs.
• Ranked second with a +15.6 grade on drop-backs lasting 2.1 to 2.5 seconds.
• Among the league’s best when throwing to outside wide receivers (by alignment) at +16.0.
• Graded at +8.0 when throwing to tight ends, including a +4.6 grade when throwing to tight ends in the slot.
• Graded at +8.1 on hitches and +7.9 on go routes.

Negatives

• Graded at -0.5 on 3rd-and-10+ and -1.3 on 3rd-and-long.
• Below average on passes in the 21-to-30-yard range (-2.8).
• Graded at -3.6 when pressured.
• Graded at -1.4 against third down non-blitzes.
• Struggled to a -4.1 grade on 4-to-6-yard drop-backs.
• Graded at -3.6 on drop-backs lasting 2.6 to 3.0 seconds.

Here's a part of the article.

"While QB Rating is obviously supposed to be a QB statistic, it’s actually a better gauge of what the entire offense did in a given situation.'

This should be interesting.

"Among the league’s best when throwing from a clean pocket" - Let's hope we can get a little more of this in 2014.

Lot's of tendencies you can see will certainly be changed with a new OC as well....IE: passes to RB's and lack of play action.

True but, this is from PFF which is all about individual play.

Agree on play action which is a HUGE help to a QB in slowing down the rush, and opening up plays to receivers, and throwing to RB's most definitely increases a QB's accuracy %. I was a little surprised on throws over 30 yards in the air, which has been mentioned by many here.

Most people don't post based on facts. They post based on emotion. I'm sure not many here would have guessed a good grade on go routes either.

Interesting analysis. I wonder if his stats "from a clean pocket" are partly skewed though considering he likely operated from a clean pocket a negligible amount of times last year with that horrid OL performance

While I like reading all of these positives, the two hints that stand out seem to remain:

1) Despite being good against the blitz, pressure works against Tannehill just like it does against Brady and Manning. Brady is particularly sensitive to interior pressure and having guys like Logan Mankins handling that allows him to be great. Tannehill is relying of far less skilled players against inside pressure.

2) Tannehill is susceptible to coverage heavy schemes. It goes back to the OL problem, but when teams sit back in coverage and rush only 4, the coverage is good end to bog our guys down. With our horrid OL, eventually the rushing 4 will get pressure. Call it a coverage sack if you like, but rushing 4 rarely gets to Manning or Brady, and if it does you know damn well that the OL will hear about it.

Hopefully Lazor's schemes, personnel groupings and pick plays will open up coverage heavy defenses. But in the end, we need more than just Brandon Albert blocking in pass pro to see Tannehill make the next step.

LOL PFF proclaims "Our stats are better" and you guys just lap it up. Of course they say their stats are better, they want [STRIKE]suckers[/STRIKE] people to pay for their service. Prove they are any better.

No one's stats are really better. They're just numbers. PFF just provides stats, percentages, and specifics you can't really get anywhere else. I wouldn't call people "suckers" because they pay for a service that provides a product you can't get anywhere else, unless of course you want to take the hours and hours to do the analysis yourself? You sound like you have some vendetta against PFF, they're just numbers, they can't hurt you. I for one, appreciate a deeper and more comprehensive breakdown, rather than the typical YRDS TD INT COMP % & QBR stat line.....only thing that bothers me is when people tote PFF as an ultimatum in characterizing a player's talents or abilities.....

Good thought, the sample size may have been under 10 passes.

They have NFL teams, agents, and almost all the media using their service. They provide something new and different, which many appreciate. Why all the unfounded hate? Makes no sense. Who do you prefer?

That's why Tannehill has got to roll out of the pocket and either buy more time for someone to get open or hit the gas and scramble for a few yards (and slide to avoid getting hit).

I don't hate PFF, I hate the argument that because PFF says passer rating is a team stat then it is so.

I really enjoyed and appreciated their in depth QB stats breaking it down into different categories. Would I pay for it? No (didn't even have to). Did I learn anything significant that I couldn't have projected from just the passer rating and a few other simple stats like the box score? Not really. Does it even matter if a QB is really efficient specifically on second down? Probably not. And their grades and rankings still seem bizarre to me. How does Tannehill have a +6.1 grade vs Foles -2.4 grade in fourth quarter efficiency? Foles is leading the league in 3 categories including his 128 passer rating, so how in the **** is Tannehill and his 64.6 rating ranked 11th while Foles is 32nd? Makes no sense.
