QB not the answer

I think people who feel the QB position is unimportant are right on the money  All we need is a good defense and running game, right? Certainly the QB isn't all that critical, I mean, look how successful we were in 2002 and 2003:

2002

Led the AFC in total rushing yards and were second in the NFL with 2502 yards, averaging 4.7 ypc and 156.4 yards per game with a total of 24 rushing touchdowns. That same season, out of the entire NFL, we were the 5th ranked defense against the run, and 3rd against the pass. Certainly this is a playoff bound team, right? NO! We didn't even make the playoffs that year and finished 9-7. Why? It's pretty simple...we were ranked 26th overall in passing!

How about 2003?

17th in the NFL in rushing, but still with 1817 yards, 3.7 ypc, 113.6 yards per game, and 14 rushing touchdowns. Not nearly as good as the year before, but still very high numbers. That season, the defense ranked 10th overall, finishing 3rd against the run and 5th against the pass. Once again, more than good enough to be a Superbowl championship team...but wait, we only ranked 26th in the passing game...again! End result? No playoffs...again.

Starting to see a pattern here? You should. While coaching was definitely conservative during these two seasons, there is absolutely NO DOUBT that the weak link on this team was the passing game. Anyone who thinks a run game and defense are enough to win is just ignorant. Miami has PROVEN that those two things are NOT ENOUGH! So, yeah, keep ignoring the QB position, it has worked real well for us.
