Third-string quarterback Cleo Lemon is expected to get perhaps the most playing time he has received this preseason Thursday.
''I just wanted to continue to get better,'' Lemon said. ``I'm a developing guy. So I'm just trying to hone in on my skills, get my skill level up and hopefully one day be a starter in this league.''

THIS AND THAT
• Saban has said he might use receiver Marcus Vick at quarterback.
• The Rams' backup quarterback is Gus Frerotte, last year's starter for the Dolphins.

I just read that in the Herald. I kind of like Lemon, but I'm wondering: if Lemon doesn't continue to develop and Vick shows promise as a backup QB-
the maybe next year Lemon is released and Vick becomes a swing QB/WR and saves one very important roster spot. Possible or far-fetched? I guess we'll see, stranger things have happened.

I just don't see Vick as an NFL QB, see his value more as a Randle-El type player. But as you say, who knows?

The other problem with Vick being the 3rd quarterback is the rules regarding the 3rd quarterback.

As the 3rd (inactive) quarterback, if he enters the game before the 4th quarter then neither of the 1st two quarterbacks can reenter the game.

So, he might be able to save a roster spot, but he wouldn't be able to save an "active" roster spot.

Interesting point, I didn't know that.

I am confused by that logic. Not trying to be sarcastic, but if we have a guy who plays two positions, why wouldnt the dolphins just list Vick at receiver and carry two Qb's? Is there a rule stating u must have 3 qb's on the roster?

There are no specific "rules" regarding the 3rd quarterback. The league does allow the 3rd quarterback, while not being on the active roster, to enter a game in the 4th quarter, and still not count against the active roster. If the 3rd string QB (that is not on the active roster) enters the game before the end of the 3rd quarter, the 1st and 2nd string QBs cannot return to the game. However, if the 3rd string QB is not inactivated, he can come and go with no penalties to the other two QBs. The Jets did this several years ago when their punter at the time, Tom Tupa, was also their 3rd string QB.

Im happy they are playing Lemon, PLEASE NO SERIOUS INJURIES, in the last pre season game... we have to saddle up for the Champs next Thurs!

I really have nothing against Cleo, but I dont really care for him. As a UM fan, I was kinda hoping that Brock Berlin would make it to the final cut. I dont see it happening though.
By the way, AJ Feeley, who was traded to the Chargers for Lemon, was cut from the team. That sucks for the kid. He did not do much here in Miami after Spielmunch brought him, but in San Diego he only warmed the bench.
At least, he has Heather Mitts to comfort him.

I'm confused. You say there are no specific rules regarding the 3rd quarterback, and then go on to list the rules regarding the 3rd quarterback...

If the third qb is already active for the game, him playing qb does not effect the first two qb's............

There is no rule about having to have 3 qbs.

For each game, every team must deactivate 8 players to get down to the 45-man game roster. This is supposed to even the playing field between teams with injured players and those healthier teams.

There is a special rule that the 3rd qb can be one of those 8 - but if injuries occur to the 1st and 2nd string qb, then the 3rd qb can play despite being inactive. If the 3rd qb is inactive and enters the game prior to the 4th quarter, then the 1st and 2nd stringers are not allowed back into the game.

So - my point was that you may be saving a 53-man roster spot by keeping Vick as your 3rd string qb and getting rid of Cleo - but you really haven't gained a spot on the 45-man game roster. You would still need to deactivate somebody else if you wanted to use Vick for WR or PR duty.

At that point you could still activate Vick and keep Cleo as the 46th man for emergency qb duty.
