So he agreed to reduce it to the minimum so we had cap room, but now he's saying he'll make a decision soon.

If he chooses to come back, what does that reduced his contract to the minimum mean? Is it like a restructure where we turn salary to bonus and the cap hit gets pushed down the road? What is he being paid this year?

my understanding is if he plays, his salary is around $1.5 million so it's not like a typical restructure where the money he gives up now will still be paid later. If he retires, the Dolphins get that additional $1.5 million in cap space.

he's not coming back imo
i think he might, because he has a fair bit of leverage now given paul did not look that great. it is going to be about money. just not sure how much more it will take to do it, and if the dolphins can free up the money. i bet in the range of $6-$10mm will get it done. obviously, he is not going to put his body through the abuse again for the $1.5mm. i would call it 50/50. you might be right, and no matter the money (he is not going to get $20mm), he just might be done. we will see.

Yes he’s definitely not playing for $1.5. For the year he had last year he’s worth $20+.

He had no more guaranteed money remaining on his contract.

If he decides to return then he will negotiate with the Dolphins how much money he will play for. He is not playing for the league minimum.

If he retires then we eat the cap hit which will be about $7.8M if its done post June 1.

By the way we currently have about $17.5M in cap space but that doesn't include the Liam signing.

i think we actually have somewhere between 8mm of cap space, and -10mm which is what overthecap now says. barry jackson said 8mm. i trust his number more. this was pre eichenberg and the rb, but if they sign for the vet minimum i am not sure they count against the cap

He probably won’t play for minimum, may get a bump up to 5-6 million base. May seem low but if he plans to retire early technically Miami could come after his signing bonus. Not sure they would but they could considering you receive a signing bonus for the whole contract and if he doesn’t fulfill it the team can try to recoup it. I’m not sure if this is what happened to Shaq Barrett which is why they said no originally then eventually they released him. He might of agreed to willingly give back the bonus so they released him despite them needing him desperately. Miami could work out a similar scenario and say hey if you play this year for 6 million base, you can keep the signing bonus and retire early next year.
