I'm back in Florida BABY!
Ok, I have a few things I would like to address concerning QB and backup QB. Just some worries I need anyone to dispell or confirm should be concerns.

There is this big debate as to whether Pep will be ready by the season opener. Now, if in fact he is ready, and for the purposes of this thread, we're going to assume ready means 100% healthy.

How many preseason games do you think he'll play in if any? If he plays in none, should we be concerned about an adjustment period as far as timing with the WR's and just an overall comfort factor running the offense. Do you think he can pick all that up simply in practice or do you think he'll need actual game time. Can he be ready to go full speed ahead against the Steelers? Or will he need a few games to get acclimated to the offense? If that's the case, then i'm concerned for our ability to be successful for at least the first 2 games or so.

If he's not ready, then who do we get as a backup that we can realistically expect to come in and lead this offense and run this offense productively? If that back up is running the offense and producing points and everything seems to be clicking and we start out say 2-0, 2-1, or 3-0, and then Duante's ready, will their be a bit of set back by bringing in Daunte with limited Reps and practice time?

Don't get me wrong, I am loving Pep being here, I am just worried about the Pre-Season/beginning of the season success if he's not 100% ready to go. Granted, we all know it's a marathon and not a sprint, and we can stuggle out to a 1-3 or so record and then when Daunte is at 100% all around readiness, we could roll off 4,5, or six wins in a row and be right back where we need to be, I just worry about the Preseason and transition to the beginning of the season and we're he will be and where we will be as far as expectations from the offense.

Or finally, do I just say "hell, Gus/Sage lead us to 6 straight win's to end last season" so it must have been Ronnie, Ricky, Randy, Chris, Marty and the improved offensive line that made THEM look good, and they can do that with anyone we put back there at Backup QB, so relax and enjoy?

ok, Thoughts?

I'm not so blind as to say that this was the only reason but I feel that it was in large part because of it.

See, I guess that's another question. How much a part of it was it? I'm hoping that the weopons we have on offense can help any QB we have in there to be successful.

Wow, what a piece. Well written and good direct questions.

I think you are absolutely correct in observing that having someone "back" for the season opener who has not played at all and/or has practiced very little in pre-season leaves us wide-open for a slow start. That's why I too want us to sign a back-up with significant NFL playing time. They should get the benefit of the lion's share of the pre-season reps and would be ready for the start of the season if Dante is unable to go or struggles with timing, etc.

The good news is that other than the timing issues, Dante should be up on the playbook/offensive scheme since it is similar to the one he excelled using in Minnesota. The learning curve side of the game should not be a problem only the physical. Given he is a veteran that should work in the team's favor. Also he should be able to work on timing issues with the receivers even if he can't go at full speed in camp.

With a rookie or someone in-experianced with a system, they might falter in trying to move it up to full game speed but with an all-pro veteran those troubles should be minimized.

I hope!

We should have cut the B.S. and signed Sage Rosenfels. No Harrington, Collins, Maddox. Just a guy who pulled us out of some tough situations which is something Gus didn't do last season. For what Harrington may cost (plus a pick) we were better off keeping Sage. He really developed a rapport w/ Chambers also. It's too bad he's playing in the city in which I live and hate for the Texans.

I think having baggett as our recievers coach is going to help the transition go alot smoother

I'm with you, I'll never understand the reasoning in letting Rosenfels sign with another team. He proved he is a very capable back-up and we wouldn't have to give up another draft pick. It looks like we're about to sign Harrington which means another pick given up. Why would we do this. Sage has come in and put the team on his shoulders and lead them to victory. See Buffalo 12-04-05, but we let him go. I just don't get it.

The most important thing that our backup QB will do is to set up the offense.
During training camps, our offensive guys will work to improve every piece of the tactics while giving time for CP to recover.
So our backup QB must throw as well as to show how our offense will move.

I don't think the preseason is that important as far as playing, as long as DC knows the playbook and the systen, which I think he will. It might be good for him to sit out most of the preseason to get his knee close to 100% but hopefully he will be ready around week one. DC is not a rookie and I think he knows what to expect.

Good post! I think you should watch the video interview with NS @ the owners meeting. It's like 2 hours long and in it's entirety anwers those questions you ask. It's on the Official Miami Dolphins website. (not dogging the master's @ Finheaven)

if he is then 1 quarter in last game! but the backup qb is just a backup plan for the opsticles ahead of us.

I liked Sage, but keep in mind his backup work came against two really lousy teams.

we need a backup that can manage the game he doesnt have to win it. Long as harrington doesnt turn the ball over. I have no problem with the trade.
I dont ask alot from harrington (even duante) but for harrington (ssince Im talking about him) having these numbers will do. Considering we have such a good offense

18-32 150-180 yards passing that would be fine with me. If our qb's whoever they would be could play like that (which is average) we can win lot of ball games with pounding the rock and play with a solid defense. Our qb's don't have to win the games for us thats how much talent we got. just manage the game. Think bears ortan, ravens dilfer.
