Favorite Shula Moment....

With Bill Walsh passing, I got to thinking how the football world will react when Don Shula Passes. Now I'm not wishing bad karma on the guy....but I know I will be sad to pieces.

Which brings me to this question....What is your best Don Shula moment or memory....
I remember him jumping up and down during the Ice Game vs. Dallas on Thanksgiving....on of my favorite games to watch. I also remeber him being hoisted up for his 300 win vs the Eagles.

So bring on the memories!

Memory is kinda vague from the Marino/Shula days, with me born in '88, unfortunately. Back then, all I knew was Marino and a few select others. But from youtube.... gotta be the fake spike.

I thought about this same thing when I saw news of Walsh's passing. I pushed it out of my mind; didnt even want to put the karma out there...

I don't have one particular memory that I can point out just an overall feeling that a great man and a great leader coached my favorite team with the upmost of class, dignity and along the way gave the franchise the undefeated season and a couple of Super Bowls. I'm a better person for the lessons in character he taught us all by example. He is one of the truly great men in all of sports and by the way he's going to live for 20 more years, God willing. Walsh will be missed by football fans everywhere.

My fondest memory about Shula is not about a certain event. Shula has a demeanor about him that seperated him from the crowd. He was tough and stern, but pulled it off in a gentle way. The rules were clear but executed with class. He wasnt a softie nor was he a pushover. He really had a very balanced coaching style. Mike Holgreme is the closest current coach I can think of who resembles his style. Shula drilled his guys so well on the basics that his plays worked based on supierior execution of them against thier opponets. Shula was not perfect and there is certainly areas where he can be critized, but in my humble oppion he was the greatest coach ever and feel privalage for having the opprotunity to tag along on his careers ride.

I couldn`t even begin to list my favorite/memorable Shula moments. Way too many memories of the guy, but seeing my first Dolphin game live in `86 at the Murph and just watching his presence on the sideline was surreal. Couldn`t believe I was actually watching THIS team live!

This one is easy for me. (Sorry this will be a little long) I was about 15 or 16 and living in WI at the time but down in Pompano visiting some family while we were on vacation. My grandmother flew in from Ohio and my Aunt, cousin and my mom went to the airport to pick her up. They asked me if I wanted to go but I didn't feel like it so I stayed at the house. Well, my mom was going through chemo treatments for ovarian cancer so she had no hair and was very weak. Weak enough to need a wheelchair. Anyway, when the flight landed, my grandmother came over to my family and said that someone famous was on her plane and my cousin (all 6'9" of him) was able to see over the crowd and noticed it was Coach Shula so he went over there and got his autograph and told him that my granmother was on the flight with him, etc. He then told him about my mom. Coach left the crowd of people and walked over to my mom, sat down next to her and talked to her for about 5-10 minutes. It was the single most amazing thing to her. When everyone else looked at this sickly, bald woman like she had the plague, he took the time to talk to her because he understood what she was going through since his wife had died from cancer. She talked about that time until she passed. I have tried to contact him to personally thank him for that. He has no idea how much it meant to all of us. A really classy guy.

I named one of my dogs after him :-)

You know it! I did write him a thank you letter, not as a fan but as a grateful son. I don't know if he read it or not but I got a personalized autographed 8x10 which is up in my office right now.
