This is a link to the various starts to teams' training camps. Opening dates vary from the earliest 7/20 to the latest 7/27. The Fins open on 7/25.

Does anyone know why there is a variation in dates? I would think that the teams (especially those with new staffs like the Fins) would wanted to get this started as soon as NFL rules allow. You would think that the coaches would want to get in as much work as possible. With the exception for the potential for injury, I can only see a disadvantage to starting camp as much as a week later than other teams...

Thoughts?

The Redskins are opening the earliest bc they are playing in the 1st pre season game of the year. But your right, I think they should get in there a little earlier even it's to just get warmed up for the 1st few days.

Yeah, it's weird though.. They are playing the Colts who don't open until the 24th... Then there's the Jets, whose rookies report the 16th...

My guess is that our coaches make the decision they think is best based on thier experience and go with it.

If I'm not mistaken, the NFL only allows so many days of training camp. You could be in camp for weeks but only train so many days total. If I remember correctly some team got punished for having to many days and they had to cut camp short.
