You are Nick Saban. The guy you have as the BPA on the top of your board is someone you doubt is in anyone's top 10. Maybe he's 15-25 on most of the boards (Just say, purely for argument sake, it's someone like Campbell, QB - Auburn; or Ware, OLB). You have some possible trade down options, but they are very weak (say a 1st and a mid 2nd or something equivalent). You don't think anyone will take this guy in the top 5-10 but you have him at the top of your board.

What do you do? Do you take him at #2 when it is a bit of a "reach" and you know you probably could get him lower (perhaps believing others have him rated high as well), or do you trade down for something far less than equal value per the draft chart?

Opinions?

You take the player you want. it was that thinking that got us John Avery instead of Randy Moss.

I'd prefer a reasonable trade down offer, if possible. But if the offers arent fair to us, then Edwards.

If we don't have a shot to pick Alex Smith, there will be no teams knocking down the doors to trade up. So we take the BPA.

I agree... my question was, the "pick Edwards" part. My original question was - what if your top player on the board is someone like Campbell or another guy in the top 15-25, but no one in the top 10 and you doubt he'll be selected there.

Edwards doesn't fit that scenario - he's sure to go in the top 10, almost a certainty in the top 5.

Again. we tryed that with randy moss and the vikings snagged him and we got stuck with john avery. so no, stay at your pick and take the guy you want.

you clearly take the best player available. you do not draft a jason campell with the #2 pick. thats a huge waste of a draft pick. thats a pick rick speilman would do in a heartbeat (big reason y we have this high a pick), but not wat the new man in town would do.
