I understand the process of signing a PS player on another team.

I don’t have an opinion on whether signing JPP was a good move. He’ll prove it was or wasn’t on the field.

However it got me wondering if and how Grier/McDaniel/Fangio know how good of shape and how well he was doing on the PS.

Questions:

Are GMs and coaches from one team (Dolphins) able to watch another teams PS practice? In person or taped?

Are they able to put him through a physical by their team doctors before claiming?

Are they able to put the player through a workout themselves?

Or does the GM have to go through the players agent?

Is there a structure set up in the CBA for how much a player will get per if they are claimed or do the Dolphins have to negotiate?

In short, anyone know the actual behind the scenes going ons leading to JPP or others being claimed?

All good questions. By logic, there must be some way that a team can assess a player. But I also understand that the team with the PS guy does not want to lose him. They would have no motivation to cooperate.
Hope someone knows and answers.

Most teams sign players they are familiar with either through pre-draft work or free agency.

I suspect that at some point the Fins discussed JPP as a free agent signing in the offseason and did the work then.

It also helps that JPP played last week for the Saints (2 tackles) so they were able to get a look at him in live action.

This has nothing to do with your questions but I saw pictures of him in practice and he looks in decent shape.

Right.

He played a bit bit last week and they must have seen enough to be confident that he can physically still do it.

To what level and how many snaps remains to be seen of course but this is a no risk move. 300K is what they have to pay him for the rest of the year.

If the Fins make a deep playoff run he can make almost that much in bonuses.

My understanding is that any practice squad player can voluntarily leave to sign with another team and be on their 53 man roster but cant leave to be signed to another teams practice squad. The Saints couldn't do anything to stop it and its one of the risk of trying to stash talent on the practice squad. The team signing that player would obviously want to do their due diligence before putting that player on the 53 by working them out or physical. And yes, an agent would likely be involved in contract negotiations, but the CBA would require at least the league minimum for someone based on their tenure.

Not a lot of risk with JPP since he already has the knowledge to be effective. It's a question of whether he still has the physical capability, which is TBD. Im sure we are paying him the league minimum. He was on the Saints practice squad for a reason.

I think this is right......I have always understood that if you want to poach someone from another teams Practice squad to bring to your 53 man roster, you can do that.....but the team that has the player on their practice squad can block that move if they promote the player to their own 53 man roster.

For veteran players, it is a way to stay available and in shape (like JPP) and for young players who are developing they can be hidden on the practice squad and you can promote them to the 53 if another team is after them.

I think it is actually a good concept and I have heard there is a desire to increase the number of players on the practice squads

Couldn't agree more! Especially with the increase in games and season ending injuries. Kinda dumb that there is a low limit to the number of PS players.

Don't forget that JPP is a player who has played at a very high level in the past. He still probably has the mentality of a Pro-Bowl and Super Bowl winning pass rusher and he is a very big man. I expect that Vic Fangio and the other defensive coaches will be able to evaluate pretty quickly what he's still got left in the tank. To be able to throw him into the rotation with Chubb, Ogbah and Van Ginkel is potentially a good thing. Don't be surprised if a fresh JPP on a good team is still able to make occasional big plays. If he hasn't got it or is slack, Fangio will probably make a decision within a few games to just cut him because Ogbah and Van Ginkel are decent.

Maybe should have waited for the Bills to release Miller but I will hand it to Grier, when he sees someone he wants he pulls the trigger.

Ps, not serious about that POS Miller but too lazy to insert a /s so will qualify it right here with a short sentence to not confuse those in the audience who can't recognize sarcasm when it's poking them right in the eye.

Too lazy to insert a "/s" so you opt for word salad instead?
