I don't know too much about Brees other than he made the Pro Bowl twice. I also saw him play against the Dolphins this year and I was none too impressed.

My question is this: Prior to the injury, could he throw an accurrate deep ball? Please answer this question if you actually saw him throw an accurate deep ball, not if you heard some "expert" scouting report.

I like the idea of Brees, being that he's a Pro Bowler who doesn't make mistakes, I just don't know too much about his arm strength, especially coming off of surgery.

I think is a tough question to answer, because San Diego has virtually no talent at WR. I don't think they threw deep much because of that.

Offensive line never allowed the deep ball. If he didn't unload it quick he was Nailed.

I agree. The two things that you know that Brees can do is hand off the ball and throw to a Tight End.

See, this is scary. Nobody knows what this dude can do.

However, I believe in Saban unconditionally. And, I believe in Mueller's ability to scout QBs. But we need a guy who can stretch the field.

Drew's completion percentage on passes longer than 20 yards is 1.5 percentage points lower than Daunte Culpepper's and is higher than Tom Brady's and Peyton Manning's completion percentage on the same type of passes.

Yes

Saw him throw the deep ball in college several times and with precise accuracy. He basically beat Ohio St. with a 60+ yard bomb and hit the receiver in stride for a TD. The receiver was his 3rd look.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere.

KB21, where did you find this stat? I'm curious as to his stats for even deeper balls than 20 yards.

You can check the player profiles at espn.com. Stats inc does the stats, and you will find the stats in the splits section.

IN my humble opinion, San Dieg ohas UPGRADED at QB by letting Brees go. I know that is a bold statement given that Rivers has not started yet in his career. But I know Rivers, I am a NCState alum and have watched Rivers every game at the collegiate level.
He rewrote the ACC QB record books on many occassions, one of which most start. He started every game for 4 full years including 4 consecutitive bowl apperances with the highlight of whipping up on Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl. He is tall and can throw th deep ball.
IN addition, his dad has been a lifelong football coach and Rivers grew up studying the X's and O's. (Manninglike)
Off the field his character is impecable, married his hi school sweetheart like his freshman or sophmore year, has kids, very intelligent and athletic. His release is unusual, looks like he is throwing a shot put.

Brees is the shortest starter in the NFL at his position, he is only 6'0", and I have to wonder what does San Diego know about his injury that they are not telling us.

But in the end, I trust Saban, and Brees is a significant upgrade to Gus(although I really hope we can keep Gus as the #2, afterall he went 9-7 and will know our offense 100 times better than anyone else we bring in to be #2)
saban knows the condition of Bress shoulder more than I ever will, and in the end saban will make the right decision. IF we get Brees ,get ready for many victories is my conclusion, maybe a 10-11 win season next year and playoffs.

He did throw deep and can throw deep. Throwing a good deep ball has more to do with timing and touch than arm strength. The NFL keeps track of stats on passes thrown various distances from scrimmage in the air. Last year, he completed 6 of 16 passes thrown over 31 yards in the air from scrimmage. In 2004, he completed 4 of 14 such passes. Overall, that's a 33% completion percentage, which is decent. By comparison, Gus completed 8 of 35 of such passes last year (22.8%). Since 2003, Culpepper has completed 29 of 80 such passes (36.25%)

I was impressed to read KB's research on Brees' long ball completion percentage. Considering that Brees played Martyball, which is about as conservative and unimaginative as Wannyball and he had no WR's to throw the deep ball to, I would say Brees did an excellent job in SD.

The important thing is that he is regarded as a tough competitor, accurate passer, and great leader. He is ready to win championships, which is why Miami is such an obvious choice for him. By the way, I wouldn't mind seeing us pick up a burner like Chad Jackson to go along with Chambers, McMichael, and Ronnie. That would be fun to watch.

This is going to sound insane....BUT, I would sign Brees and then trade him to NO along with some draft pics and move up to get Cutler or Leinhart.

I know it's easier said than done.

By, the way....Matt Schaub is a beast.

Drew Brees ability to throw the deep is not that great. No, he didnt get nailed, and no, he didnt have horrible talent at WR. Get out of here, you dont know what you're talking about.

Brees is at his best short to intermediate. Alot of the times when he is throwing deeper, it's a jump pass where Antonio Gates is outmuscling a defender. I dont think Miami is going to run the same kind of routes and throw the ball the same way they did last season if they get Brees.
