Just watched the game on NFLN. Quick Thoughts:
- Offensive line - Pass blocking wasn't as bad as I thougth it would be (after reading some of the comments) but the run blocking was very bad. This unit has to get better, and it's gotta happen fast. I'm not going to jump off a bridge after one preseason game, but the total lack of push along the interior is a bit troubling. If this line doesn't come together we are in trouble (and so is Sparano).
- Running Backs - I'll freely admit that as bad as the line played it was tough to evaluate the runningbacks, but I was pretty underwhelmed by the group of backs I saw. Nobody looks special to me, and Sheets/Hiliard/Grigsby all look like guys that are more insurance policies than guys that you expect to get carries. Didn't see much of Thomas, but nothing that I did see caused me to look twice. I'm worried about this position, but hoping that, at least with respect to Thomas, we'll see more next week.
- Wide receivers - I truly believe we have legitimate depth at wide receiver. Moore and Wallance are guys that look like they're ready for a shot, and Gates looks like he's going to add much needed speed to our team. This is starting to look like an area of strength for this team - but can we capitalize on it?
- Matt Moore - His arm strength is definitely below average. He played well, but it seems clear to me if we end up starting Moore over Henne it would be more because Henne disappoints than any hope that Moore could be the answer. In short, I think it's a bad thing for our franchise if Moore ends up starting.
- Chad Henne - First INT was not his fault, but the second clearly was - whether Bess ran the wrong route or not. That said, I thought Henne had a better 'look' last night than ever before. Not sure exactly what it was, maybe even just confidence, but he seemed to be more in command and more calm. It's not much, but it gives me a bit of hope.
- The offense - 5 WR sets, shotgun, downfield passes. Who knows whether it will be successful, but it was nice to see a 21st century NFL offensive scheme. Also, I had this fear that it didn't matter who the OC was because Sparano was tying their hands by forcing his conservatism on them. I feel a little better after this game.
- Epps (the TE)- He caught my eye. He's got a great build and seemed able to get down the field. Could mean nothing, but I'm intrigued.
- Defense - They have nothing to prove. No need for any concern.
- Odrick - Had a great move to get in the backfield to blow up a running play and also got some nice pressure on the quarterback a couple of times. Starks and Langford seem like locks, but I'm not sure how you validate keeping this guy off the field. Any chance we see more 4 man fronts?
