From what I heard he had a stellar workout, good 40 time, solid wonderlic score, undefeated college season. 32 TD's 4 ints , 10 rushing tds and almost 70% completion % his senior year. the question is what else could he possibly do?
Has anybody heard anynews on ricky williams?

He's smart, very young, and had a superb statistical season, so on paper (read- sportswriters who never look at college palyers till the draft) he looks great.

but it does seem like a real weak class for Qb so I understand cheapshotz"s concern. He was the "dark horse" to make it in the first round when lienhart was still in, no he's the definate 2 QB taken. And it could just be from the system.

also- does anyone know how well urban meyers quartebacks fare in the NFL? It would be a good to rate the system along with the QB.

Kind of how Rivers bolted up the board last year

Alex Smith could be a good QB in the pros but there are a few things going against him.

1. Only 30% of 1st round QB's are successful in the NFL, only 2 qb's are projected to go in the 1st round at the moment that means that it is likely that both Rodgers and Smith will be failures.
2. He doesn't take balls well from under centre, and his drops aren't very good either.
3. He has a slow release on drop back throws.
4. He has only an above average arm.

It doesnt take a miracle to take a rookie QB who came from a different offence and have them run a new offense well... ie. nearly all QBs that come out of the Draft.

Im not knocking Alex Smith......

But tell that to Tim Couch.

Tim couch ran a very similar offense to Alex Smith and he did not translate well to a "pro style" offense.

When Couch was in college how many snaps form "under center" did he take?

Things like that worry me.

yep, the only difference i can really see is that Smith plyed in a gimmicky offense and Rivers played with no one else on offense

but other than that- both highly accurate, good decision making, good leaders

But we still don't know whether or not Rivers is a bust. He hasn't played just like Alex Smith so he might as well be considered a rookie as well.

No one can seriously compare Alex Smith to crank it up Timmy Couch

Couch had the worst mechanics of any high profile college QB of the modern era. I started calling him crank it up Timmy Couch the first time I saw him play as a sophomore. His release was laughable. And it was only slightly worse than his arm strength. He could get decent distance on a lofted pass, but the required 3rd and 10 passes never had any zip at all.

I realize I'm alone in this opinion, but to me Tim Couch was a much worse draft pick than Ryan Leaf. The Chargers would definitely have opted for Manning ahead of Leaf. They were desperate for a QB and, after trading up, Leaf was the only QB remaining who was apparently worth that high a selection. The Browns were picking first and had zero excuse. They identified a flawed prospect like Couch when you had Culpepper and McNabb sitting there. Akili Smith and Cade McNown also, I concede.

Ryan Leaf had the physical ability to succeed bigtime in the NFL. Tim Couch did not. He even flunked his workout, before the Browns were tunnelvision idiotic enough to insist on a do-over for their myopic eyes alone.

Maybe I just like to rip Tim Couch because I correctly predicted his failure for months on a Las Vegas radio sports talk show, saying I wouldn't pick him in the 4th round or earlier.

Alex Smith has great agility and feet. That has not been mentioned in this thread or emphasized enough on this board. He is far superior to Aaron Rodgers in that regard. Not as nifty as Stephan LeFors, but the type who will make plenty of positive plays out of nothing. The arm strength is slightly above average, but his release is a little bit long and the ball position lower than ideal. He must be working on that aspect. The pictures and clips I've seen of his post-season workouts feature a much higher ball position than I remember from the past two seasons, when I watched Smith play 20+ times from Las Vegas sportsbooks.

Is wasting the #2 pick on Alex Smith. Just ask the Cleveland Browns how hard is to recover from a wasted pick on a scrub QB.

If we pick Smith at #2 we'll have many more picks in the top 5 for the next few years.
I would say tradeing a 2nd round pick for a 3rd string QB but thats just me.

2) another quick way to ruin a team. Dave wanstadt becoming head coach

Or you could ruin a franchise by picking up cheap backup Qb's and other team's castoffs instead of drafting real talent. Im not saying Smith is the answer but lets stop being melodramatic, if this pick is a bust, regardless of who it is one player is not going to destroy the franchise. It hurts yes, but look at Cleveland, they made TERRIBLE move after terrible move. They hired a horrible coach in Davis, they drafted duds like Couch, Brown, etc, etc with top 3 picks, they picked up duds in FA.
Franchises are destroyed more with terrible front office hirings and coaching hirings than a single draft pick. We wasted a ton of first rounders and we never approached Cleveland Browns level of ineptness (until this year that is).
If Saban is the real deal as a coach we will be good, if not the #2 pick is irrelevant.

Alright, we'll use Detroit then, They have talent everywhere on that team and they aren't going anywhere because they picked Joey Harrington with the 3rd pick in the draft. That team is afraid to admit he's a bust and every year they go into the season hoping he'll produce. This year is probably his last chance and i'm sure he'll disappoint cuz he sucks. They'll be picking a QB next year in the the top 10.

Detroit is still reeling from Millen hiring that idiot Morningweg. Millen did a horrific job of building the team and he hired a buddy of his to coach. I would expect a turnaround this year for them, Mooch is a good coach and its taken him a few years to get some real talent on the team. Again, it was the front office hiring idiots that caused this team to be so pathetic. Harrington hasnt played great and he might well be a bust but its more than that. One player or one bad draft pick doesnt destroy franchises.
