WWBD (What Would Belichik Do?) :ponder:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Quinton Coples simply couldn't fit in with Todd Bowles' defense. The New York Jets waived the outside linebacker on Monday, cutting ties with the team's first-round draft pick in 2012.
''He just wasn't playing,'' Bowles said during a conference call. ''We didn't have a spot. We weren't playing him and he wasn't getting any time. It was just a business move. It was nothing personal.''The move was a surprise despite Coples' diminished role in Bowles' defense. Coples played only five snaps on defense in New York's 24-17 loss at Houston on Sunday after playing just seven against Buffalo in the previous game.

so who do you cut to make room for our new olb ? forget it the guy is bum.

I liked him a lot at North Carolina. He has always been misused with the Jets. First they had him playing DE in a 3-4 which he is not fit for. Then they switched him to OLB which he has never played. Coples IS a 4-3 End, nothing else. In Miami, that is how he would be used and with the interior line we have now he will flourish. i say sign him. There are plenty of players we can cut to make room.

I would love to see what this guy could do the rest of the year, in a 4-3 and playing with Suh. I wonder if he would pick up his game in Miami. I would def. claim him.

Plus, you show the team you are still working to win.

Wow. I'd take him. Why not? Cut Damien Williams to make room.

He has 16.5 sacks in 3 years. Not bad.

he has been playing out of position for a couple of years now. He just needs the right opportunity and he can be a quality player.

whats the strength of his game? Rushing the QB, playing the run, etc?

it should be rushing the passer, he has shown flashes of being a really good pass rusher. 3 things held him back- 1)not the hardest working guy 2)playing out of position 3)dumb penalties. he would make some incredible plays then grab the facemask or do something stupid to kill it. he has ability, he's worth a shot. someone will pick him up and he has a chance to succeed.

Not opposed to the idea but if he's claimed off waivers, we'd be on the hook for his 2015 option ($7.75M) if he suffers a serious injury. That's definitely a risk. Might clear waivers because of that but I wouldn't be surprised if someone gambled.

Jets waived OLB Quinton Coples.
Coples played just 21 snaps total the last three games and has been a limited contributor all season. A first-round pick in 2012, Coples has 16.5 career sacks in 56 appearances, but he did not get to the quarterback once this season as a poor fit in Todd Bowles' scheme. If a team nabs Coples off waivers, they would be on the hook for his $7.751 million fifth-year option for next season, but the option is guaranteed for injury only. Nov 23 - 12:15 PM

If he goes unclaimed maybe bring him in for a look but not a waiver claim for him..

You could still cut him if he does not pan out, but I completely agree with Junc's assessment. I think he could fit. This team needs DE's next year anyways.

We still play the jests one more time.

Just based on that they should sign him for this year

The REALLY crazy thing is

We are still not doing that badly compared to most of the NFL teams this season.

The season can still be salvaged to some degree

If it's truly only guaranteed for injury and we can cut him easily then it seems like a good fit. We need a 4-3 DE and he's actually been productive (and we play the Jets this week).
