Dolphins | R. Brown on trading block?
Mon, 20 Apr 2009 06:31:49 -0700
Michael Lombardi, of The National Football Post, reports the Miami Dolphins, for the right price, might be interested in a trade involving RB Ronnie Brown if another team calls and expresses an interest.

At first I said WOW...then I realize it's just Parcells. Unlike the past management...Parcells would trade away Brown...because he knows...Browns value will never be higher...and running backs have a short football life span in the NFL.

So I wonder...will anyone make a offer?

In fairness, I could also write on my blog; "Colts, for the right price, might be interested in a trade involving Peyton Manning if another team calls and expresses interest." That's sorta like saying....."I might trade my Hyundi for another car if someone calls expressing interest." The statement has no real validity, but, it's not wrong, either.

True Goon...but Manning is the franchise and brings in money....Brown is a very good running back...but running backs are found everywhere....and rarely stick around for 10-12 years. I guess this is from what the Dolphins GM said earlier...that no player is untradeable.

That's my point. I was really just saying that you could literally write that statement about any player/team and not be wrong. It's just garbage journalism.

Isn't Lombardi the guy that has taken over for Adam at NFL Network?

This is what Lombardi actually wrote;

"For the right price, I hear (and I emphasize hear) the Dolphins might be interested in discussing a trade involving starting running back Ronnie Brown if a team calls and expresses an interest. On the surface, that may come as a surprise to some, but when you look over the tape and Brown’s production, even though he almost had a 1,000-yard season, he only had three games over 100 yards. His longest run (62 yards) came from the wildcat formation against the Patriots, and his next long run was 30 yards. In nine of his 16 games he had fewer than 50 yards rushing, hardly a classic full-time back."

everyone knows if you want to trade someone you leak it to the press that you "might be willing to listen to offers"

it basically means you want to trade them, but without openly saying it and p***ing the guy off so he never plays for you if you cant trade him

I don't think a trade happens for Brown unless we get a great offer either players or picks.

1 year left on his deal - if they dont plan on re-signing him to big bucks then take what they can now before he leaves next year (or his value is far lower)

While running backs tend to be more NFL-ready right away than players at other offensive positions, Ronnie Brown is very good and there isn't much reason to trade him. The only scenario in which it is worthwhile on our end of things to move Ronnie is if we can move him for a first round pick between 11 and 20.

In that range we should be able to draft our choice of Knowshown Moreno or Wells before the Eagles pick. With the Peters trade completed, I would be very surprised if the Eagles do not take Moreno or Wells if either is on the board at 21. Westbrook just is not capable of being the only game in town anymore.

Personally, I'd opt for Moreno between the two because I believe that Moreno has a better all-around game than Wells. If we knew that we could effectively trade Brown for Moreno then I would have no problem doing the deal. Moreno is significantly younger and would cost less money than Brown.

But it takes two to tango. The reason why Wells and Moreno are not going as high in most mock drafts as their talent dictates is because there aren't a lot of teams that need running backs. And some of the teams that do need running backs, like Denver, are still not likely to trade for one, because they think that anyone can succeed in their system.

The perfect dance partner in terms of needs would be the Cardinals. There's a team with a high-octane offense that already made it to the Super Bowl last year. It makes more sense for them to trade for Ronnie than draft a RB because Ronnie is a proven NFL RB and Arizona's window to contend for a championship is only open as long as Kurt Warner can play.

There's only one problem: the Cardinals' first round pick is #31. The Dolphins will not be able to get either Wells or Moreno there. And I do not think it would be worthwhile for the Dolphins to effectively move Ronnie for LeSean McCoy or Donald Brown, even if they are cheaper and younger. If the FO feels differently it is something they can consider, but I just don't think that either is a sure enough bet to make trading Ronnie away worthwhile.

The bigger issue to me is on the Ricky Williams end of our backfield tandem. This team could survive with Ricky as the #2 back for another year, but I cannot conceive of a scenario in which he returns in 2010.

I would not be surprised if the Dolphins draft a RB this year along the lines of Cedric Peerman or Rashad Jennings, a guy who can be had in the 3rd or 4th round. That guy could replace Ricky in 2010, or even now, if we want him to.

We'll trade Ronnie if the perfect storm manifests, but without the opportunity to draft Wells or Moreno, there's very little reason to make a deal.

This could be a reason why also;

Peter King, of SI.com, reports some NFL teams are scared off by a sesamoid bone problem in one of Ohio State RB Chris Wells' feet.

Boy...it's getting hot and dirty now;
