Nice read on what McMillian brought to the field as a player for OSU. Safe to say Miami was looking for smart, high character players this year and this guy really fits the mold. Loving the pick more and more I read about the kid.

First, he gets the call from Ohio State defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Luke Fickell. “And then I relay the message to the guys in front of me,” McMillan says. “And the guys behind me.”
Depending on the offense’s formation, McMillan might have to realign the Buckeyes defensive linemen. After that, he’ll relay the coverage to SAM linebacker Chris Worley and safety Damon Webb.
“Once I communicate it to them,” McMillan says, “that’s when I go through the eyes and feet, the body formation of their line. See if I can get some keys on the play they’re about to run.”
And then?
“Once I get that, that’s when I’m in a different mode. That’s when it’s time to lock in, time to go back a play.”

Perhaps that’s where McMillan’s growth has been most apparent. With nearly double-digit duties on his pre-snap checklist, sometimes what he does before a play is more important than what he does during it.

Get the play. Call it out. Adjust the line. Set the secondary. Key in on clues.

Check, check, check, check and check. And that’s before taking into account commanding the Ohio Stadium crowd.

Comparatively, what are Buckeyes defensive end Jalyn Holmes’ responsibilities before each play?

“Wait for Raekwon to tell me to do,” Holmes says with a laugh.

Perhaps that’s why the criticism for McMillan is so confusing — in many ways, the junior captain has already done it all.

Here is another nice quick read about him, didn't want to start another entire thread.

Hearing stuff like this has me even more exciting, looking for keys, calling the D....we got our defensive leader...

Once he sets foot on the field, good luck getting him off it. He will be a 10 year starter from the first day of training camp on.

I thought he was seriously under rated leading up to the draft and I was ecstatic when he was picked. After his combine performance, I didn't think he would last to the middle of the 2nd round. After watching his tape compared to Cunningham, I wonder how ZC was rated higher. I also don't think he's much of a drop off from Foster.

the more I read and watch tape on him, the happier I am with the pick. I liked Cunningham, but had not dug into RM much.

I really hope we put him at middle from the get go.. let timmons play strongside..

We haven't had a true MLB leader since Zach.

I love the pick just based off talent.

The guy got knocked for not being athletic enough yet he ran a 4.61 forty lol 2nd behind only Duke Riley (4.58) (and Peppers but he isn't a backer).

The leadership he's going to bring sets us up perfectly for when Timmons is done. Love the pick!!

Great overall draft in general!!

Kiper is such an idiot he thinks we made a mistake by getting a premier run stopper.

Cunningham plays Kikos position and can't tackle for $hit!! He finished 171 in tackling % lol

Mcmillan missed 23 tackles his whole college career while cunningham missed 21 just last year.

Kiper is about as clueless as a paid "expert" could be. Pretty sad he's ESPN's draft guru. Mcshay is way better

Kiper is the absolute worst guy. Cannot stand him at all.

Everyone always wants to point to what the Patriots do. Well we're not the Patriots. We can't get mediocre talent to mesh into a fantastic unit. And we don't have a lot of the successes they have. But here's one little tidbit that everyone knows. The Patriots stock their LB corps with people who are good tacklers. In Raekwon McMillan, we have a guy who is a stud tackler, and also a workaholic, and a smart guy, and a leader, and a physical guy, and a rangey guy, and someone who knows how to sift through traffic to get to the ball ... no matter what his assignment is, he can do it. Literally the only area where he's not exceptionally good is in pass coverage. And honestly, after Foster, I'm not sure any of these rookie LB's is great at pass coverage yet.

I had McMillan rated ahead of Zach Cunningham and Jarrad Davis, but I like all 3 of those guys. The fact that we got a guy who looks to be a coach's dream in an athletic package with instincts and tackling ... that's such a huge improvement over our putrid LB corps of recent times, I cannot even quantify it.

Like hearing this stuff:
“One of the most mature people I’ve ever seen come walking into a program as a young person,” [Urban] Meyer said of McMillan earlier this week.

It will be a shame if he plays the SAM. Timmons, get over there...take your $11 million...and like it.

It will be one season wasted toward who/what he is supposed to be.

I've posted this elsewhere.. One does have to tip his hat at Mel for making draft evaluations entertainment-worthy, although I believe someone else whose name escapes me, actually was its pioneer. Mel has also admitted that tapes are all he needs and has never attended a single Combine. This plus his huge swings and misses, often falling on his own sword, diminishes Mel's evaluative judgement. If a team evaluater negates or rejects his opinion, he then downgrades the team's draft (case in point Asiata being deemed 'undraftworthy" by him).. you know, like the fruit from a poisoned tree.

to wit:

Kiper's Terrible Picks

Promised in 2010 to retire in eight years if Jimmy Clausen wasn’t a successful NFL QB. While most people viewed Clausen as a second round pick, Kiper had him as the fourth best player in the entire draft.

People were quick to point out that Kiper’s rankings might be biased because of his friendship with Clausen’s agent, Gary Wichard — something Kiper scoffed at.

Kiper was so confident in his analysis of Clausen that he had this infamous exchange with ESPN foil Todd McShay:

Kiper: “If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I’m done. That’s it. I’m out.”

McShay: “What is your time frame, Mel? When do we make that assessment?”

Kiper: “I want eight years.”

Ranked Andre Wadsworth the No. 1 overall prospect of 1998 NFL Draft ahead of Charles Woodson and Peyton Manning and compared him to Bruce Smith

Said in 1995, “Ki-Jana (Carter) could be the next Bo Jackson”

Called Packers drafting Matt Hasselbeck in the 1998 6th round a waste of a pick

Gave Seahawks’ 2012 draft a C- grade after they picked Bruce Irvin, Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson

Had NFL draft bust Dan McGwire and Hall of Famer Brett Favre rated evenly as QB prospects before the 1991 draft

Thought 1988 29th overall pick and four-time Pro Bowler Chris Spielman would be a fourth or fifth round pick

Rated LaDainian Tomlinson tied for the 25th best player in the 2001 draft

Said 1990 7th overall pick Andre Ware would be an “excellent” NFL quarterback

Kiper upped the ante by naming Curry the best player in the entire 2009 draft ahead of players like Matthew Stafford, Brian Cushing, Jeremy Maclin, Clay Matthews and LeSean McCoy.

Said 1999 3rd overall pick Akili Smith would be a “great” NFL player

Proclaimed Johnny Manziel would be 2014’s #1 overall pick

When asked in a draft recap show who would have the best career of the QB Class of 2011, Kiper said it would be Stanzi — over fellow QBs like Cam Newton and Andy Dalton.

Said 1998 2nd overall pick Ryan Leaf’s attitude would be an “asset” in NFL

Said that JaMarcus Russell could be a top five NFL QB and was “John Elway-like” at 2007 NFL Draft

Despite sitting out a year while attempting to enter the NFL draft after his sophomore year, ex-USC wide receiver Mike Williams had Mel Kiper drinking the Kool-Aid. How high? Kiper had Williams rated as the best player in the entire draft ahead of players like Alex Smith, DeMarcus Ware and Aaron Rodgers — among others.

On the Patriots' 2000 late round selection:
Brady’s selection should not affect backup quarterbacks John Friesz or Michael Bishop.

And then of course, there's the love for Brady Quinn

Agreed. I don't care about the dollar signs, Timmons will still be getting a decent amount of playing time. Put kwon in the middle and leave him there

This is what made Zach indispensable on the defense. He made sure that everyone was in position to make plays, he was a true QB of the defense, and when a team gets one of these, your defense automatically become far more efficient in making plays.

McMillan to me seems to be that type of player, great anticipation/awareness of the play, and able to communicate well with his teammates to help everyone get in position...this is the type of leaders we need.
