It seems as if Jim Bates is a goner........

You can't get somebody elses DC in the NFL wothout promoting them to Assistant HC........

So is the alternative a college coach?

If you liked our vanilla defense...then you will LOVE Shannon.....

Not gonna happen.

There are already rumors that the Texans defensive line coach is going to be the DC.

He has no history with Saban, good as he is. Look for Dean Pees to be the DC, with Duane Akina or Steve Szabo as other leading candidates.

I was impressed with Shannon in '03, but he really didn't show much this past season; in fact, his largely-veteran Defense actually regressed this year. Injuries didn't help, but they weren't the reason Rolle and the other DB's did not play well, and seemed to lack focus; in particular, Greg Threatt was a major disappointment.

I'm not sure I would trust him with a pro D just yet; maybe a couple of years down the line, when he proves he can field some consistency IMO.

Pees is the Pats LB coach, Akina is the University of Texas joint DC and secondary coach, Szabo is the Bills 2ndary coach.

I'll pass on Shannan. He doesn't fit what the Dolphins will do defensively next year. As Alex Marvez said, the days of the Jimmy Johnson-Dave Wannstedt "you line yours up, we'll line ours up and we'll see who executes better" defense are over.

Pees is interesting, he does great work with the LB's in NE. Look at Teddy B, the guy is slow and not though of as a great LB, but all he does is makes plays when needed.

VETERANS?!!?!? HUH!?!?!? He lost like 6 starters to the NFL last year. This year was largely ROOKIES. Not to mention injuries at almost ever position.

As the free agent period starts to heat up w/o a DC, I am starting to like going with the native son again and it is his birthday coming up this week. C'mon Nick give Randy a nice present.
