.. and why

(Off the top of my head) for me the tops and bottoms are:

Shanahan
Jackson
Coughlin
Billick (won't happen because Ross allegedly hates him, but I'd welcome him under certain circumstances)
Marrone
Shaw (probably a pipedream)
Gase
Payton
McDermitt

Don't Wants:
Mangini
Haley
Lynn
Schwartz
McDaniels

When looking at the potential candidates...here is my personal order of preference...

1. Shanahan - Has already expressed a desire to work with Tannehill, and has an offensive philosophy that would fit his skill set, he is also an individual who would do work on the offensive line, he is also a man who has worked in the league long enough to have great connection in building a staff.

2. Coughlin - For some of the same reasons I like Shanahan, also, listening to some of his players speak about him, he is someone that is well respected by his team. If you are looking for someone to make over the culture of the team, he is a great candidate.

3. Jackson - Has head coaching experience and while he didn't have success, he wasn't in the greatest position to do so, but having that experience and learning from it could help and seems to have found a way to help Dalton take the next step and may just be what we need to Tannehill. I think if he is paired with the right DC then you could potentially have the right guy.

Personally, I like the older coaches, not retreads in a sense, but those that have been around long enough to be able to sniff out bull**** quickly and make good personal decisions when it comes to who plays. I honestly have no problem with looking at Austin and Gase and think they are good viable candidates, but I just feel, based on the culture of the team and how it has gone about it business the last few season, it may need an older coach.

Shanahan - Wants in, knows how to win the big one, likes what we have, not a lot older than me.
Coughlin - Wants in, knows how to win the big one, a bit old for my taste but I'm game if he is.

I think either of those two guys could be the new Sheriff we desperately need.

I'll pass on the rest of the guys, let them cut their HC teeth somewhere else. After all, our best coach ever cut his HC teeth in Baltimore, not Miami. And that worked out perfect.

David Shaw
Mike Shanahan
Tom Coughlin
Hue Jackson
Jim Mora, Jr.
Sean Payton (So low because of compensation)
Jim Schwartz
Adam Gase
Doug Marrone

As you can see from my list, previous HC experience is really a must have for me. The only coordinator I would even consider at the moment is Gase and I'm not very high on him, in fact I think it would be a big blunder to hire him as HC.

Shanahan
Jackson
Combo of Coughlin and Campbell
Gase

I also like Payton, but understand he is unavilable and looks like he dosen't want to come

Shaw is staying at Stanford, reported yesterday

Five wants, lukewarms, and not wants:

Want:

1. Mike "The Tan" Shanahan
2. Hue Jackson
3. Adam Gase
4. Sean McDermott
5. Armando's not-gonna-happen Tom Coughlin / Dan Campbell apprentice scenario

Three veterans and two first timers I would be interested in. If we're going to get a first timer, it had better be a really, really, really promising first timer, and I think McDermott and Gase both interest me enough that I'd call them that. I have Shanahan rated so highly not because I think he's a match made in heaven for #17, but because he is a GOOD HEAD COACH. The fact that he would maximize the value of a key asset on our football team is just beautiful, beautiful icing.

Lukewarm / Depends on Coordinators:

1. Mike Shula
2. Jim Mora
3. Teryl Austin
4. CHUD
5. Josh McDaniels

McDaniels really should be in with the next group (the dysfunctional people), but there's no denying he is a sharp coach. On the off chance that he actually learned something and was humbled by his experience in Denver, might be worth a look. I'm also kind of interested in Rob Chudzinski, I think he got a raw deal in Cleveland and is worth another look. He's a bright guy. Jim Mora is someone that I like quite a bit, but at his last two stops he's hired Greg Knapp to be his offensive coordinator, and Greg Knapp is terrible as a pro offensive coordinator.

Not Want:

1. Chip Kelly
2. Todd Haley
3. Doug Marrone
4. Eric Mangini
5. Matt Patricia

Four completely dysfunctional individuals that would turn our franchise into a dumpster fire and one hobo that Bill Belichick gives a play sheet to troll the NFL. He's going to laugh so hard when somebody hires this bum.

Shanahan
Jackson
Marrone
Coughlin
Austin
McDermitt
Gase

Payton, 2nd to last
Coughlin, last

Sorry, coaches' abilities, as with players, change over time, and 2009 is a long time ago, especially in NFL years. If you weren't happy with Philbin's game management, you won't be happy with Coughlin's.

I can't believe there are people that want Doug Marrone in their top 3.

Quits on other NFL team.
Constantly at odds with everyone because always angling for more Power.

Referred to himself at St Doug meaning everything goes through him.

Funny actually.

Just based on his stint in Buff. He had you guys playing great football until the rift with FO happened.
