In thinking about how we want to get a vet backup QB this offseason,
ive been trying to figure out who i like the best and who i would want to see playing for the dolphins. this is what i came up with, please feel free to compare with your own opinions:
1. phillip rivers, chargers
2. jon kitna, bengals
3. gus ferotte, vikings
4. mike mcmahon, lions
5. rich gannon, raiders
6. billy volek, titans
7. jay fiedler, dolphins
8. quincy carter, jets
9. kurt warner, rams
10. jp losman, bills
11. tommy maddux, steelers
12. trent green, seahawks
13. doug flutie, chargers
14. mark brunell, redskins
15. anthony wright, ravens
* i didnt know whether or not to call jeff garcia a backup or what, if he is, id put him #4.
doing this made me realize two things. one, jay fielder is a good backup. he's done well for us a couple years and he gets a bad rap around here. it seems like he will only be remembered around here for this season and how he sucked. newsflash, everybody sucked this year - not one QB on this list would have made this offense any more successful. i hope that i will always remember jay's tenure here favorably, remembering him as an excellent backup who you could trust who just happened to get extrememly lucky and found himself starting and winning for a couple years on a good team.
the other thing i realized was that there are two kinds of backups: the rich gannon/kurt warner/mark brunell types and the phillip rivers/mike mcmahon/anthony wright type, and a couple of QBs in the middle like Jon Kitna/Qunicy Carter. The difference between them is experience mostly, and I'm curious what kind of backup Saban wants. Does he want AJ to get usurped or mentored.
anyway, thats what i think.
