Yes he was practicing in camp.. but ricky being out the first 4 games and ronnie gonna be the starting tail back he will never see the field on punt returns. They were just trying him there in case if they get in a pinch during the regular season.

Saban said it was only to get Ronnie in better shape after holding out for so long and that he wouldn't be used there in a game.

Saban said that Ronnie was returning kicks for conditioning reasons only. He missed the conditioning drills during his holdout so this was a way to help get him up to par.

Wouldn't that be considered Wannyish? Continuing to pick up free agents and draft players at a position (CB) that really isn't a need? Not crucifying you but I couldn't resist.
