Re-fueling The Phins "Running On Empty?"

We all know only too well that our running game was a disaster, and the OL was as bad as bad could be in blocking for our RB's. The OL is a HUGE issue, which will be addressed. This is about our RB's, and what to do in FA and/or the draft.

Many say that good RB's are a dime a dozen but, it seems like we are having trouble in getting our two cents worth let alone ten. I believe that everyone here agrees that Miller is a keeper for now in some regard. Few care for DT, and no reason to rip him here. He ran hard and is what he is. Few like Gillislee, and Thigpen was not any help. So, what do we do?

John Kuhn is a 31 year old FB from GB. He is the 2nd best blocker among FB's but, do we really need or want a FB taking a roster spot for around 300 snaps?

Blount is a 27 year old RB from NE. He was in on 40 pass protect plays, and did not give up any kind of pressure, while running 153 times for 769 yards and 7 TD's. He is not a VG receiver.

Gerhart is a 27 year old RB from Minny. He is not a good blocker or receiver but, ran 36 times for 283 yards on 200 snaps.

These are the only ones who interest me in FA. MJD was not the same last year, and Bradshaw is always intriguing but, keeps getting injured.

I see where the draft in very deep at RB, and a good one can be found in the 3rd or 4th round.

For me, I'm thinking of signing Blount to help us and hurt the Pats IF he does not cost a lot, and drafting one.

Take BPA RB in 4th round and call it a day.

Blount will demand a hefty contract after a good season with the Patriots. IMO he is one of the most hot-or-cold players in the NFL. One game he will carry the 20+ times for 100+ yards and look unstopabble. Other games he will fumble 5 times on 3 rush attempts.

Blount would be a cheap add via FA. Then draft a guy in later rounds that's physical and can convert a 3 and short. I'd like a Tre Mason in 4th (would be ideal but easier said than done)

Blount will be far from cheap. He had a good season with NE and there is plenty of interest.

Mason is a 2nd round RB that should sneak into late first given a good combine and interviews.

We cant stop at OL - we desperately need a viable RB. Miller and Thomas suck, and that's a fact. Massive upgrades at OL will only bring us marginal results unless we couple that with a new RB.

I like Gerhart in FA and Andre Williams in the draft. I lean to Gerhart because the backfield is already so young that an older guy could really help. When i see what williams can do he run through guys rather than around them and with Miller and Gillislee what are more speed and make guys miss.

Daniel Thomas most likely will be released, and Thigpen is a return guy and a screen guy. He wasnt really anything above average in the CFL when taking handoffs.
With a re-tooled O-line the holes will open and Miller will get some good runs more consistently, he is good but you cant run when there arent holes. Adding the true power back will bring that 3rd dimension to the offence and some toughness that will make guys pay for tackling him.

The other options in the draft I see are Hyde who will probably be long gone before the RB gets addressed and Hill who has that history and also could be gone before RB gets addressed.

When Ireland let Ronnie and Ricky walk, we never found a replacement. Anyone will do a better job than Ireland. I am excited to see what Hickey come up with.
I think we should add pocket Hercules MJD and draft another big physical back to replace Diane Thomas. The big back and MJD can compliment Miller. Gillisse can back up.
Furthermore, the team should draft a full back. We need to have a hard nosed running game. Clay is no full back. He cannot move the pile.
This draft should be all about Oline and improving the running game after we take LB Mosley with our 1st pick.
