I will start by saying I understand that it is pre-season but I love to win so I will be disappointed if we lose to this Jaguars team. I think we are superior at every position when comparing our team against the Jaguars. I don’t care about the final score but I won a “W” and I’d like to see us get the ball in the end-zone a few times. Here are the things I will be looking for….

*The development of Chad Henne; Henne will see a lot of time and I want to see him make good decisions and strong throws. Can he really be good to unseat the 2008 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Chad Pennington?

*I am excited to see the return of Jason Taylor to Miami. Taylor is one of the true greats of the franchise and I want to see how effective he can be.

*I am excited to see our 2009 NFL Draft Picks play especially Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, and Pat White.

*Cameron Wake was a star in the CFL and has looked stellar in training camp but how will in translate onto the field?

*The receiver core is crowded and it seems like Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess, Patrick Turner, and Brian Hartline are locks with Anthony Armstrong, Ernest Wilford, and Brandon London fighting for that final spot. I think Wilford has a serious chance due to his cap situation and versatility.

*Speaking of Ted Ginn Jr., how will he look in year 3? Can become that play maker he showed serious glimpse of last season?

*Which bubble player is going to show up today? Can Jason Allen solidify a roster spot? Can Brandon London put his physical ability to work and make some plays? Can 7th Round Pick JD Folson push Reggie Torbor for a roster spot?

It seems like there are many questions to be answered and not all of them will be answered in the first pre-season game but it is fair to judge. Especially those look for roster spots 40 thru 53; they better bring it because these positions are important for good teams to fill. I purposely saved my Weekly Dolphins Top 25 until after tonight’s game so I could have more to go off of. ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOTTBALL?

I am sad that I gave away tickets to tonight’s game away to a few of my clients. On average each trip from Baltimore to Miami cost me around 500-750$ b/c I bring my wife along and food, beer, flight, rental car, and did I say beer can cost a lot and I just cannot justify it for a Pre-Season game. (I’ll get with Nublar and the moderators about this but if you carry a Blackberry and are interested in custom Miami Dolphins skins on me from Blackberry I’ll let you. I am getting them for .20$ a piece because I just landed a deal with Disney that sold over 15,000 Blackberry Curve’s so I am getting a steal; usually custom skins run about cost about 2$ and retailers will sell them for 20-30$. Private Message me if you are interested; NOTE this is not set in stone yet so don’t get mad at me if it doesn’t pan out. I am sure making custom skins for some Dolphins fool isn’t a priority for the biggest manufacturer of handsets in the world currently but we will see. If not with I am sure I can get the teal color which is a custom color)

I like the Land Shark Stadium name and to be honest it’s a solid beer. Throw a lime in it like a Corona and it’s seriously a good effin beer. The Dolphins finally have some star power with Joey Porter, Ronnie Brown, Chad Pennington, Jason Taylor, and Jake Long.

· Am I gay if I have a man-crush on Sean Smith? I mean physically this guy is unparallel to any Corner in the same. I think he is going to become a big-time player in this league, maybe even Asomugha like.

Here goes with my in-game analysis…

· Good kick-off by Carpenter. I cannot remember the last time we had a kicker who could consistently kick the ball into the end-zone? Olindo Mare early in his career I guess…
· Yeremiah Bell seriously flies around and hits everything in sight
· Akin Ayodele with a beautiful read and nice hit on Maurice Jones Drew
· 3 and out to start. Our first string defense looks solid.
· Adam Podlesh out of Maryland with the punt which was retunred for 7 yards by Chris Williams; Williams looked very shifty on that return
· Ronnie for a couple, nice extra effort. John Henderson is a monster in the middle.
· A lot of pressure for Jacksonville early. We go three and out as well. Pennington targeted Bess twice on that drive. Where is Teddy Ginn?
· Yeremiah Bell forces a fumble on Troy Williamson. God Bell is friggin good. Williamson recovers.
· SACK! Joey Porter with great pressure; Coverage sack. Sean Smith shutting down Torry Holt on the play. Jason Ferguson credited with the sack. Holt is a 7 time pro-bowler and Smith is a rookie in his first NFL game and he blanketed Holtlike my eyes on Jennifer Love Hewitt’s breast in “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
· The Jaguars go 3 and out again against the Dolphins First team defense.
· Chris Williams bobbled ball but picked it up and goes out of bounds
· I want big results but the reality is that you want everyone to stay healthy, everyone to get the rust off, and the young talent and bubble players to show you why they belong
· Pennington to Davone Bess. Solid route by Bess for a gain of about 8 yards
· DONALD THOMAS inserted into the starting Offensive Line. He will be the opening day starter.
· 3rd and 1 and Chad Pennington finds Teddy Ginn Jr. for 10 yards and a first down. Pennington is lethal on 3rd downs…
· Pennington to Ginn for 16 yards. Great catch for Ginn. Ginn is playing with confidence. Break out year.. BOOK IT
· Since Thomas was inserted into the starting lineup there has been no pressure from Jacksonville
· Strong run from Ricky Williams driving a corner for 5 yards. 11 yards on the play; having a back up like Ricky is a luxury. Davone Bess blocking down the field.
· TIMEOUT Dolphins. Why did Ricky retire in 2004? This guy would have been Marino-like in Miami.
· Holding on the play. I think it was Vernon Carey. Jake Long is dominant.
· Pennington ran into by a running back and fumbles but Chad recovers.
· Ricky Williams for a loss of one. Quentin Groves, a 2nd Round pick out of Auburn in 2008, with the tackle.
· Sparano is fired up.
· Here comes Carpenter on a 48 yarder. I am pulling for Dan over Connor. Carpenter drills the field goal.
· Lex Hilliard with a nice tackle on special teams
· Screen eaten up by Channing Crowder
· Torry Holt with a nice catch on Will Allen for a first down
· Akin Ayodele on the stop after Greg Jones gains a couple. We got Ayodele and Fasano for a 4th? Really?
· JASON TAYLOR IS BACK! Great pressure BY JT. He completely destroyed Tony Pashos. Almost a strip by JT.
· Chris Williams fields punt at 10 and gets tackled at the 1.. WTF are you thinking?
· Loushaka Polite for a couple to get us a little breathing room
· GINN!! Draws a pass interference call which gains us 33 yards. Dude Ted Ginn Jr. is hungry…
· GINN on the around for 14 yards.. Ginn reminds me of Steve Smith from the Panthers. He took this same play to the house twice last year.
· Ronnie Brown for 2 yards. Jake Grove struggling with John Henderson
· First Quarter is over and Chad Henne is getting ready to go…
· Brandon Fields with a great punt nailing the Jaguars within the 10 yard line. Penalty on Vontae Davis. Fair Catch Interference. Bone-head play
· Our first string defense OWNED the Jaguars.
· Vontae Davis comes up and makes a very solid tackle. You have to love this guys ability to come and hit.
· Gibril Wilson grabs Vontae and yells at him for the fair catch interference. This guy is a leader with a ring to prove his salt. Tyrone Culver beat by Jarrett Dillard out of Rice
· Gibril Wilson pushed Dillard out bounds. Nice to see someone other than Renaldo Hill out there.
· Eric Green gets beat by Troy Williamson for 17 yards. Eric Green went from starter to the number 4 corner on this team.
· Quentin Moses on the tackle. This guy plays hard and shows great pass rush ability.
· The Jaguars moving the ball on our 2nd team defense. No Merling.. No Wake…
· On 2nd and 1 the Jaguars run but are stuffed by Gibril Wilson. Josh Scobee attempts a long field goal which is barely good…..3-3
· I am so tired of Brett Favre. In my mind he is longer a legend and should just go talk with Fox and get a reality show. People ride TO for his drama but Favre is the worst I ever have seen
· Chris Williams with a solid return but knocked out of bounds by the kicker.
· I wish the Dolphins were on HBO’s Hard Knocks. I mean why the Bengals? It’s a great show..
· Wow does Ricky look powerful. Just ran two people over for 10 yards. That stiff-arm is great; Ricky looked better than Brown tonight
· Starting OLINE protecting Henne but 2nd string receivers and backs..
· Henne seems very poised out there
· Henne finds Hartline for 20 yards. Hartline’s good play in practice in translates to the game.
· Ricky spins out of tackle and breaks a tackle for 4 yards. Ricky looks strong
· Jake Long just owns whoever the put against him
· Henne finds David Martin for 7 yards. Henne reminds me of Joe Flacco a little.
· Loushaka Polite for no gain. He doesn’t look as strong running the ball as he did last year.
· Henne to Patrick Turner for 10 yards. Turner is huge and runs such polished routes. Caught the ball and moved up-field for a few. Donald Thomas owns Derek Landri on the play.
· Ricky Williams gets the first down on his third effort. He runs so tough and I truly believe if he never left football he would be Canton bound in the future.
· Henne to Polite for 2 yards
· Dan Henning doesn’t want to show much of their red-zone offense. Play calling is extremely limited tonight
· Jake Grove on the false start. How does the center false start?
· Henne throws a beautiful pass to Ricky which he should have caught for a touchdown but Ricky cannot hang on. Ricky usually exhibits great hands and his catch against New England was far better than what this catch would have been. Henne looks poised and very solid to me thus far.
· We kick another field goal and lead the game 6-3
· Eric Green can’t cover. He gets beat for another first down
· Cameron Wake is in the game playing with hands down.
· Big pass to Troy Williamson, didn’t see who was covering
· Lucky bounce goes Jacksonville’s way. Our defender taps the ball 8 yards down field into Williamson’s hands’ for a first down
· Tony McDaniel is all over the place. He runs down field and makes a tackle on a Jags’ receiver.
· Eric Green almost gets the INT
· Tyrone Culver has gotten his hands on a lot of balls tonight. That didn’t sound so good
· Back to back False Starts for Jacksonville
· Cameron Wake totally eats up Tony Pashos and gets pressure on Todd Bauman. Great speed pass rush and used his hands very well. He was less than a second away from getting a sack.
· Scobee hits a field goal and it is tied at 6 going to Half Time.
· 11 first downs in the first half is very encouraging
· Between Joey Porter, JT, and Wake we got some serious pressure on Jags’ Quarterbacks.
· Chris Williams with another good return to start the 3rd Quarter. Hartline blocking on the return
· Henne finds London for 6 yards
· Brandon Frye didn’t even touch Derek Landri as he bust through the middle to sack Henne
· Depth at tackle continues to be a concern
· Fields absolutely kills the ball for a touch back
· Chris Williams with a sensational punt return
· 24 yards on that run by Williams
· Henne with a very nice pass and an even better catch by Patrick Turner for 17 yards. It’s pouring..
· Henne tried to force a pass and was INTERCEPTED. Poor decision and poor throw
· Illegal contact on Vontae Davis. That is his second penalty in the game. Very questionable call IMO
· Sorry had to take the dogs out but another Jacksonville Field Goal and the Jaguars lead 9-6
· Chris Williams with another impressive Kick-Off return plus tack on 15 yards for a facemask
· Lex Hilliard runs looking for contact and runs about 4 Jaguars over
· HENNE to Ernest Wilford for a 34 yard touchdown pass. Nice throw and a great broken tackle by Wilford. Could he make the team? I think because of his versatility between tight end and wide receiver that he makes the team. Carpenter slips on the mud and misses the extra point. Wow! Congrats Ernest!
· SEAN SMITH WITH AN INTERCEPTION in the END-ZONE. This guy is going to be very good. He ran the route better than the receiver and was so fluid in his movement. Wow! Special!
· PAT WHITE is in
· Hits Pat Turner on a 5 yard gain then Turner drops the next one.
· Lex Hilliard runs through a big hole for a first down. Nice block by Shawn Murphy
· White scrambles and runs for 8 yards. Man he is quick…
· Lex Hilliard breaks a few tackles and pounds for 6 or 7 yards.
· Turner with another drop, tough pass though.
· Pat White intercepted but it wasn’t his fault at all. Bounced right off of #45 Anthony Kimble’s hands. Perfect throw.. Pack your bags Kimble
· On 4th and 5 Jason Allen breaks up a bass for a turnover on downs
· Anthony Armstrong drops a perfect throw from Pat White
· Bad snap handled by Pat White. It’s really muddy and wet out there.
· Cameron Wake gets the tackle on punt coverage
· Solid tackle by Joey Thomas
· Jason Allen with another solid tackle and then a few plays later with a nice play in coverage. He is outplaying Eric Green for sure.
· JD Folsom with the Interception

It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win and I come away very encouraged. Donald Thomas needs to start at Right Guard. This guy comes in and the whole demeanor of our line changes. Adding Cameron Wake and brining back Jason Taylor could be a huge pay off because these guys get pressure on the Quarterback in a big way and with Joey Porter on the other side we could be in for a treat. Sean Smith is going to be special as he made his first Interception in a Dolphins uniform and just shut down whoever he was covering. Vontae Davis needs to focus as it’s obvious he has all the physical tools but he accounted for two penalties; the running into the kicker is inexcusable. Lex Hilliard looks like a bruise but unfortunately he will lose out in the numbers game but I hope we can store him away on our practice squad. Please do not read Pat White’s statistics and think he played poorly. A lot of people who were on the field when he was won’t be here much longer and the interception was not his fault by any means. Chris Williams impressed me a great deal returning kicks. I will work on my Dolphins Power Rankings (Week 3) today and post either tonight or tomorrow.

good post man! i taped the game but since i work shift schedule and night crew i won't be able to watch the game until weds if i want to get any sleep. awesome write up appreciate your time!

Good post... I love the following quotes:

SACK! Joey Porter with great pressure; Coverage sack. Sean Smith shutting down Torry Holt on the play. Jason Ferguson credited with the sack. Pennington to Ginn for 16 yards. Great catch for Ginn. Ginn is playing with confidence. Break out year.. BOOK IT

RealDriscoll, it's pretty obvious why the Bengals were chosen to be featured in "Hard Knocks": the NFL wants a tie-in with "Cops."

Michael

RealDriscoll do you think that Hillard can make it as our Fullback, beating out Polite who didn't look to good to me? He was on the practice squad last year, so I don't think he can be on it again (unless I'm totally wrong). He seems to like hitting people and definately runs hard. If we let him go, someone will definately pick him up.

It's like we're on the same wave length. Seriously, why not give Hilliard an opportunity at the FB spot? He may not beat out Polite, but at least let him show what he's got.

tcolli,

Lex Hilliard sure looked good. He runs with power and I was hoping he would get a fair chance. I don't see him making the team though because the Dolphins do have a successful three-headed monster in Patrick Cobbs, Ricky Williams, and Ronnie Brown. I think we may try to store him away on the Practice Squad but someone will take him

Adam,

I am not because the mistakes that Vontae Davis made were mental. He has actually looked very solid in camp thus far but in the first pre-season game he did make some bonehead penalties. Physically the guy is as impressive as they come and I had him as my number one corner entering the draft. Despite the penalties watch the run support he brings. He nailed Jaguars back Rashad Jennings on one play. Vontae will be fine; I do not see a Jason Allen 2.0 here

Is comparing Tedd Ginn Jr. to Steve Smith really homerism? Are you just saying that because currently Steve Smith is in the upper-tier of receivers in the league. Based off numbers and build it is a fair comparison. In Steve Smith's Rookie season he played in 15 games catching 10 balls for 154 yards and zero touchdowns. In year two Smith caught 54 balls for 872 yards for 3 touchowns. After two seasons Steve Smith had 64 receptions, 1,026 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 39 rushing yards. It wasn't until year three that Steve Smith grew out of his shell and in year five is when Steve Smith became one of the elite receivers in this league. Unlike Ginn Steve Smith is not afraid of contact but that is also why he can be considered injury prone and not to forget that he beat up a teammate which is pretty low IMO.

In his rookie season Ted Ginn Jr. played in 16 games catching 34 balls for 420 yards and 2 touchdowns. Like Smith, Ginn improved in his 2nd season catching 56 balls for 790 yards and two touchdowns. Ginn also rushed for 73 yards and 2 touchdowns giving him 90 catches for 1,210 yards and 6 TD's. Ginn actually has more catches, more yards, and more touchdowns. Ginn is obviously playing with more confidence and was the best player on the field in Monday's scrimmage.

You hear that bell? Class is dismissed 72...

Well, if you wanted to compare Ted Ginn now to Steve Smith going into his third year that's another story entirely. But that's not what you said.
You said "Ginn reminds me of Steve Smith of the Panthers" which sounds like you're comparing their level of talent right now... Which is not accurate as Steve Smith is at worst a top 7 receiver in football.

Real, Nice read. As always I enjoy reading your work.

72, I have to say every time I see your posts it seems like they are criticizing people for their opinions. It's a message board, you could probably pick out a problem with everybodies posts because we all have differant opinions on stuff. That's the beauty of a forum like this... We can discuss opinions with fellow fans.
