The former second-round pick has occasionally teased the South Florida faithful with his combination of power and outright tenacity but has yet to become a consistent contributor along the defensive front. Now, heading into his third season, this holdover from the Nick Saban era is currently slated to start opposite eventual Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and is primed to stake his claim as one of the centerpieces of Miami's youth movement on defense.

This is going to be Roth's breakout year. He was a beast in college and projected to be a first round pick. He also had a heck of a senior bowl.

If Roth can continue to play at the level he played at in the second half of 2006, he may indeed become the next leader on the defense.

In 2006, his sophomore campaign, Roth gradually increased his level of production as the season progressed, bagging 37 tackles, 3½ sacks and three forced fumbles. Most impressively, all of his sacks and forced fumbles occurred in the final seven games of the season, when he was entrenched in the defensive rotation. Clearly, this is a young player on the upswing.

We "need" Roth this year big time I beleive many fans are overlooking how important it is for him to contribute big time this year in order for the dolphins to be sucessful!

i've always liked what i've seen from Roth on the short amounts of playing time. I believe he's capable of being a dominant leader for our defense in the years to come. With more playing time, coaching and responsibilities we will really start to see what he can do.

Dude, that was four years ago. He has flashed but not been consistent. I doubt he is a starter in this defense.

I'm very excited for Matt. I know Kevin couldn't be benched due to his cap number and veteran presence, but I can't wait to see him this year.

I am not sold on Roth either. I don't think he will pu up awesome numbers but he will be solid.

Hes been pretty consistent when in the game, but the thing is he didnt start. And thats not a knock against him, with Kevin Carter and Jason Taylor over you.

I don't think he'll ever be more than a Chris Kelsay type of player.
