Let's assume that these reports of Tannehill being gone is accurate, who might the Dolphins bring in for 2019?
I believe 2020 is the year we truly rebuild and next year is simply a suck-for-high-draft pick year as we're going to have a lot of dead money and this year's upcoming QB draft class is not too appealing. With that being said, who do we go with in 2019? Imagine Tua or Fromm in 2020 or even Herbert if he stays in school for one more year. Yes please.
-Brock Osweiler/David Fales - Both free agents but perhaps we sign one/both to lead this team to misery and a top spot in 2020 draft to eventually sign Tua. We would easily have the least-talented QB in the AFC East giving us a great opportunity to have a top 3 pick in the 2020 draft. I'd actually be okay with this. Probably nets us 1-3 wins.
-Joe Flacco - This is likely a top target to bring in if the front office is retained and they're desperately looking for an option to try and win now. I don't see this ending any better than this year. Probably nets us 6-8 wins.
-Tyrod Taylor - This guy probably wants out of Cleveland. Slight upgrade over Osweiler, probably nets us 5-7 wins.
-Cam Newton -Completely throwing this out there as pure speculation. Perhaps throwing high draft picks at Panthers could get them to give up Newton. This would be somewhat of a risk as he has an injury to his throwing shoulder that should require surgery. Rivera would be on the hot seat so drafting a QB early in the draft would buy him more time. This could net us 8-11 wins but cant truly see this happening, especially with Cam's salary.
-Eli Manning - No, just no. Pure 1 year stopgap that does nothing for this team as he may actually lead us to 5-7 wins which keeps us riding mediocrity.
-Nick Foles - This guy is going to make money next year. I see him as a system QB and I don't want any part of him.
-Andy Dalton - Tannehill 2.0. No thanks. He probably stays in Cinci anyway.
-Blake Bortles- Jags will be done with this dud. Stay away.
-Teddy Bridgewater - Intriguing guy. This falls into the Joe Flacco discussion. Bring in the guy if the front office is retained and they're trying to win now.
-Jameis Winston - Winston in South Beach would not go well. Stay way from this turnover machine.
-Derek Carr - Gruden looks to be cleaning house and will be able to get his guy early in the draft. Carr might be an interesting option but it's kind of reaching as although he may be an upgrade of Tannehill, it probably isn't by much.
All in all, if Tannehill is truly gone, 2019 looks to be a horrible season for the Dolphins as there isn't much out there. Not to mention, if the Dolphins FO did like in the draft, they wont be able to get above Bucs, Jags, Raiders, Giants, Redskins.. There are just too many teams desperate for a QB.
I'd "rent" Bridgewater for the year and see what he's capable of. If he's good, great, sign him longterm. If he sucks, no big deal, we signed him for 1 year.
