In previous threads I have read everything from "Nick Saban is just another rookie coach that has no idea what he is doing" to "We should have drafted (put name of favorite QB of 2005 draft class here) in the first three rounds". This is just my opinion on why things are the way they are going into the new NFL season:

Yes, we very well could have picked a QB in the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft. But ... Roth was projected to go as a high first round draft pick (and i do not see any reason why we would have picked any of the QB's available in the second round anyhow), Channing Crowder has already become a starter and Travis Daniels has also been battling for a starting position. Nick Saban is doing just what he said he would do ... REBUILDING ... and in a few years when Madison, Zack, Seau, and JT are gone, yes believe it or not they are aging and won't be around forever, you will understand why Saban drafted these three legitamate suitors for our defense. He took over this team knowing that we were in REBUILDING mode (once again I stress that word) and he decided to start off with the Defense because he may very well be a believer in the theory that Defense wins championships. He also brought in a lot of older veterans, which a lot of people are giving him crap for, because they can TEACH the rookies the ins and outs. Coaches can not teach rookies everything. Veterans who have been around for a while can show the new guys everything that they know. Saban IS looking to bring this franchise back to a winner but with the roster we had coming in there is NO WAY it could have possibly happened all this year. With a new and refreshed Miami Defense coming into next season Saban will have a chance to look at an offense, especially a QB, to build around next year in the draft and FA. But ... do not be surprised in any sense if he does the same thing with the offense next season by bringing in a former Pro-bowl ability QB and former Pro-bowl ability OLineman that are wayyy past their time to come in just to teach the new guys that he picks up in the draft next season. Who knows, maybe we'll luck out and our Oline will step it up and glue together this season and we will only need minor tweeks to our offense with a new QB, which is inevitable, and a few other positions. Hopefully we can even just get a QB in FA or a trade for Brees or Rivers. Just remember, we are REBUILDING and we have to be patient. It is likely that we have another long season ahead of us, in all reality, but look at what Saban came into. He knows how to win, but most of all he knows how to be patient.

you know not to bring up the R word here:yikes:

But seriously, you have a good point. The reason we got one of the best grades in the draft was due to picking the best player avilable when we picked. Yes, our QB play may suck this year, but only so many holes can be fixed in one year. We've been coasting on the JJ draft choices for years, and age and inability to find good FAs or draft picks has little a small nucleus of good, but older veterans and no other stars. The youth movement, along with bring in the veterans to help bring them along, is setting a strong foundation for the future.

thank you for bringing up a good point.

Good post!

yup. hes trying to match the age of the defense with the age of the offense.

in the mid 90's our d was too young. after marino retired our D came into its own, but it was too late. the offense was dead.

saban doesnt want to be stuck with an offense that gels and becomes productive, while the defense regresses again

its a balancing act and i think hes doing it the right way. however, a good qb MUST be brought in within a year or two

Good post, however I think you will catch some hell for it.

Seems like a good plan. The fins are still a way from being a playoff team. Hopefully with a good draft next year and some solid fa pickups this team can become a playoff team in a year or 2

Or in short...

"Make haste slowly..."

agreed, but many dol-fans really cannot fathom the concept, and understandably so. 2004 was the first losing year since 1988, many finheaven members werent even alive then.

besides i think watching a team get built up for superbowl contention is just as fun as watching them in the superbowl. because you can sit there and look back and say ''wow i remember when we couldnt even throw that ball.'' or ''geeze our defense and running game is domonant, unlike 3 or 4 years ago''. we can sit here and watch them grow. watch the rookies flourish. besides id think id rather see a rookie qb come in here only after this offense has been established and everyone else has learned it. look at all the examples of rookie qbs comin in and being successful the offense was already established and the guys on offense knew what they were doing. ours isnt. they might have a slight grasp of it. but imo not enough to bring in a rookie qb and throw him to the wolves.

I made it by a few months. :)

Great post, now I hope the others who posted "Why didn't Saban get a QB?", "Why didn't Saban get this or that?" will read this. Again, great post.
