Red Sox trading for AJ Burnett this week?

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/328888p-281134c.html

Nice move if and when pulled off, at least for the short term. Bit of an injury risk and the jump fron the NL to the AL has proven to be deathly to 90% of pitchers these days.

I think this move tells me the Sox have no confidence in Schilling at all for this season. It will also be interesting to see if Baltimore or Chicago who want AJ really bad come in last minute and try and trump the Sox deal. Especially Baltimore.

(If pulled off) As a Sox fan I would be concerend they have major dollars tied up in AJ and Wade Miler for the long-term. Two guys who have a history of major arm problems and might not be durable enough to live up and live out those long term deals.

other reports are Minny and B'more are willing to take Mike Lowell and his big contract off Florida's hand in a package deal of AJ/Lowell. Which interests Florida greatly. To unload some payroll.

Looks like something is going down this week and I think B'more and Boston are gonna get in a war over AJ. Lowell might be the key in this.

I'm always very wary of these reports that say "this will happen within a week". Seems like those sort of things fall through a lot. The longer something goes on, the more likely it is to collapse. Not a knock against you, Mike, just saying that I wouldn't call it a done deal yet.

i didn't call it a done deal

Everyone says that Burnett is an injury risk (me included) however when I was listening to WFAN in New York Thursday and someone was on (I'm pretty sure it was Larry Bowa). He said that Burnett isn't as big as an injury risk as everyone says he is, he had arm surgery in a 2002 would cost him the season and half of the 2003 season but aside from that he has been pretty healthy. In fact Burnett has thrown a few complete games this season for the Marlins. Either way I agree with you Mike that if the Sox get him it'll be like Pedro Martinez all over again between him and Miller, biting your nails while having your fingers crossed hoping neither will blow out their arm in his next pitch.

If they didn't have serious money tied up in Miller, then its no big deal. But when your two big young pitchers would have serious arm or shoulder history problems, then you have to think long and hard.

Now if they add AJ and win the World Series this year, then screw the future and it was a great move to win NOW!

They don't have serious money tied up in Miller, he's making peanuts ($1.5 million a year). The problem with the trade is that Mike Lowell will probably be involved in the deal and his 8 mill a year signed through 2007 doesn't look very appealing especially with his numbers this year.

I thought it was 1.2 million. Either way Miller was going to be the steal of the century if he reverted back to his old self. Miller is one of the cheapest guys on our pitching staff

I got the salary information from ESPN.com so you could be right too, either way he's a good bargin. The best part about Miller is that the Red Sox own his rights for next year too.

According to rotoworld.com:

"A source told the Baltimore Sun that only the Orioles and Red Sox still in the race for A.J. Burnett. The Orioles package still includes Hayden Penn, Jorge Julio and Larry Bigbie. They also might be willing to take Mike Lowell, assuming they can dump Steve Kline's contract in the process. The Red Sox would give up Bronson Arroyo and prospects."

Also according to someone on a different message board Mike Lowell is NOT in the Marlins starting line up today. I'll confirm/deny this rumor as soon as I can get an official line up for today's game.

Ah, yes, let's ask the Marlins fan here. First of all, to get A.J., whatever team takes him must take Lowell or completely wow the Marlins with their offer. Since Boston will not take Lowell, that means they must give us Bronson Arroyo, Hanley Ramirez, and one of the best close-to-MLB pitching prospects Boston has.

A much more likely suitor is the other Sox. They can give us Contreras, who the Marlins have liked for years, Damaso Marte, Aaron Rowand, and/or prospects Brian Anderson/Brandon McCarthy.

If the Orioles want him, which they do, they're going to have to alter their offer of Hayden Penn, Larry Bigbie, Jorge Julio, and Steve Kline. At first, Daniel Cabrera was on the table, but they took him off and put Penn there. It's gonna take Cabrera for them to get A.J.

The Twins might be interested in Lowell and therefore may take A.J. simply because they'd have a shot at him. Any deal would include Kyle Lohse, but look for the Marlins to ask for Jesse Crain.

Toronto could also want A.J. and they have pieces to offer. Gustavo Chacin, Ted Lilly, David Bush, Miguel Batista, and Frank Catalanotto have been bandied about in different combinations.

Then there's the Yankees, who could always climb in. They'd have to make an offer with pro guys like Tom Gordon and Hideki Matsui, something they're not likely to do.

I doubt the Marlins would trade him to a contender in the NL because they are competing for the Wild Card and don't want to strengthen any opponents. If I were betting on it, I'd say Chicago had the best shot, followed by Baltimore, Minnesota, Toronto, and Boston. Boston is last simply because they keep saying they won't give up Ramirez and you all know they don't need and won't take Lowell.

The Yanks aren't in this race. Tom Gordon hasn't given up a hit in like 26 innings or some crazy stat like that, this guy found the fountain of youth. He isn't getting traded with NY's sshhittyy bullpen! And Matsui is in the final year of his deal I doubt Florida wants him.

I agree although maybe if the Yankees put Cano, Eric Duncan, Phillip Hughes, and Sean Henn then I could see Florida being interested. However if the Yankees did that deal then they would have no decent prospects in their farm system.
