Redskins furvor?

I was just curious as to what people think about the redskins possibly changing their team name?

Personally? I'm against changing the name for two reasons. The team has a long, proud history with that name.

Secondly, we performed a mass genocide against native Americans and their time as a race in this country may come to an end someday in he lives of our grand children and great grand kids and I think that is extremely saddening and makes me embarrassed for my ancestors. I can only hope that more teams honor Native Americans by using them for team names and logos so that we may never forget what we did so that we may never do it again.
 
I was thinking about this today.

I think there are some people out there that are desperately looking for something to feign outrage over, & other's that are probably way too sensitive. There are groups who feel it's an offensive slur, but if I remember correctly there was a Sports Illustrated poll saying about 75% of Native Americans seem to be cool with it (not bad, but I'd feel better if that percentage was even higher).

I personally wouldn't want to see the name changed because the Redskin's logo is one of the most identifiable in all of sports, & they have some classy uniforms as well. Also, whatever lame animal they would inevitably decide to replace it with doesn't have a chance of being as cool as the old name/logo.

That said, I have a hard time believing anyone would be okay with a team called the Blackskins, or the Yellowskins. I have a theory as to why we all seem to be cool with it in the case of the Redskins, & I think it’s because there’s a bit of a disconnect between our Hollywood characterization of an “Indian”, versus actual human-being Native-Americans.

Think about it, it’s like ‘Indians’ are fictional characters to us. We have Cowboys vs Indians. We have kids dress up as ‘Indians’ every Halloween & no one finds it offensive, but try putting black-face on & see how that works for you. We don’t even think of them as real people. In some sense, they might as well be Vampires, Pirates, or Storm-Troopers to us.

Make sense to anybody or am I way off-base here?
 
I don't think they are going to change it, nor do I think they should.

As Rob has said, it's getting to the point where people are really TRYING to find things to be angry about,
that are inoccuous at worst. It still amazes me that nobody's over the American Civil War yet,
even though it was in the 1800s.
 
they do not need to change there name people just need to get over it and let it be it has been the Redskins forever and i hope they never change it
 
eff the name change whako's ,next they will go after the dolphin name saying it's animal or fish abuse or what ever.

Has anyone checked out out all the dolphin nuts on the Dolphins twitter account...have a look every 3rd post is save this dolphin and that one. Dont get me wrong,there is a lot of weird stuff going on in the ocean but Redskins cave the Dolphin name maybe next.
