Success didn’t spoil Reggie Bush. Even after an impressive performance in his first home game as a Dolphin last Friday night against Carolina, Bush was once again the last man on the practice field Monday.
Afterward, Bush took the podium for his third interview of training camp and offered his unequivocal support of quarterback Chad Henne, who also had a strong showing against the Panthers.
“I thought Chad played well,” Bush said. “I’ve been saying since I got here, day one, Chad’s got the tools. It’s just fine-tune those tools, just like we all have to do. I saw some great things from Chad from Day One, and he has the mechanics, he has the tool, and this offense is going to do wondrous things for his career … I’m looking forward to him putting up another great performance.”
After sitting out the Atlanta pre-season opener, Bush accounted for 81 yards on 11 touches, rushing eight times for 48 yards and catching three passes for another 33 _ all in one half of play. Widely expected to get only 7-10 touches a game this season, he looked more like a feature back, running frequently between the tackles.
Bush said he enjoys that aspect “because I get to get up field quicker rather than (on) the outside tosses. Inside, you make one guy miss and you can be gone, you know, 50, 60 yards.”
Asked if he’s tempted to bounce a run outside where he can use his speed more, Bush replied, “It’s not so much the temptation, it’s more I just try to focus on taking what the defense gives me. So not really forcing, bouncing runs outside, more just when it’s there, it’s there, that’s when you take it. But for the most part I try to do a good job hitting the ball up the field and set them up to bounce the ball outside.”
With two pre-season games yet to play _ and five more practice sessions before game-week preparations begin for the opener against New England _ Bush said the Dolphins still need all the time they can get.
“I don’t think as a team we we’re ready to start the season, and as a running back I don’t think I’m ready yet.
There’s a lot I need to work on; I’ve only played one pre-season game. I’ve had a lot of practice time with the team, but being out here in game situations is a lot different. So I definitely have a long ways to go and hopefully this next game I will get a bulk of play, to get a chanceto build on and fine-tune my tools.”
