DENVER (May 23, 2006) -- If Reggie Bush had hoped to wear jersey No. 5 for the New Orleans Saints in 2006, he's out of luck.

The NFL's competition committee decided at the league's owners meeting here it will not recommend a change to the numbering system for jerseys for the '06 season, and it seems unlikely that it would do so for future seasons.

What's everyone's take on this? I personally think it's absolutely ridiculous that he can't wear #5. That number would boost sales BIG time. Not to mention, as a player, your number is VERY sentimental. It's just a friggin number, why the hell can't he wear it? I think it looks WAY more ridiculous that WRs can wear numbers in the teens than it does if a RB wore a single-digit number. The NFL, IMO, COMPLETELY dropped the ball here :shakeno:

*EDIT* Oops, I forgot I was still in the Lounge, can a Mod please move this? Thanks, and sorry.

*2nd Edit* How the hell did this get in the LADIES Lounge? I was in the regular Lounge when I posted this

I think it is ridiculous if he wore #5 b/c then NO would have 2 players wearing 5 as Adrian McPherson already has #5.

Well, he could "buy" the number from Adrian, like Eli Manning did from the Punter when he got drafted, and like many other players do. They didn't not let him wear #5 because Adrian has it, they didn't let him wear it because it isn't 20-49

you serious?

Smart move by the NFL. I don't think a rookie should just walk in and change a rule because he doesn't like the way it is. He hasn't done anything in the NFL yet and it won't hurt him wearing another number.

The debate isn't necessarily JUST for Bush, my argument anyway, is about the rule in general, I'm just citing Bush because he is the most recent example since Edgerrin James petitioned to wear a single-digit number when he came into the league (I believe he wanted #5 too).

Ace do you PLAY sports? I have all my life and I can tell you, and many other lifelong athletes can also, that your number is a big thing. Some people don't care, but a lot of people have had a particular number since they started, and it kind of defines who they are, plus it's a comfort thing.

Plus, it's not like he wore some crazy number in college, like 65 or something, and wants THAT to be his number, that just looks completely out of place, like in college when linemen wear single digits, or numbers in the teens. Reggie wants to wear number 5, and single-digit numbers look completely normal on a RB, they look MORE natural than numbers 11-19 do on WRs, and the NFL approved that.

he has a right to ask, but the nfl doesnt have to let him.

he was not asking to wear #5, he was asking the NFL to get rid of that rule, which was unlikly.

but on top of that, why should a multi-billion dollar buisness change the rules just for some kid just out of college? if they do eventually change the rule it will have nothing to do with R. Bush.

Yes and the #25 he wants to wear if he can't get 5 is also used by a current Saints player.

Well, he could "buy" the number from Adrian, like Eli Manning did from the Punter when he got drafted, and like many other players do.

he could but it's a little weird to me that he would be doing this while he dosn't even have the opportunity to wear it even if he could unless he has a deal in place already w/ AM if he was allowed to wear it.

Rookies who ask the NFL to change the rules just for them are starting off on a bad foot.

They guy has never played a down in the NFL and he wants special treatment?

I hope he plays up to his hype.

You guys are both mistaken. Reggie asked for an exception to the rule and to be able to wear #5, the NFL decided that instead of voting on making an exception for just one player, they would instead vote on whether to change the numbering system altogether, Reggie didn't ask for the rules to be completely re-written, that was their own idea.

The thing that gets me is BEFORE the NFL changed the rule so WRs could wear numbers in the teens too, WRs were still wearing numbers in the teens and just paying a fee every game. If they were allowed to wear a non-positional number and pay a fine every game, why shouldn't Bush be allowed to? He by no means is the first rookie to request special permission to wear a non-positional number, so why is eveyone on his case? I'd do the same thing. I'm not really a Bush fan, I don't like him but I don't hate him, I'm indifferent, but as a lifelong football, and other sports, player, I know how important a number can be. I think the NFL is making a huge deal out of something that isn't that big a deal, and they are being hypocritical because they have allowed it before and CHARGED players to wear non-positional numbers

Yea, 25 is also taken, but again, he can "buy" it, or just ask the guy if he is willing to switch numbers.

He WOULDN'T buy #5 from Adrian if the ruling didn't go through (it didn't, so he won't), but you asked why they would let him wear #5 if someone already wears the number, and I said the fact that someone already wears it doesn't matter, if the NFL granted him permission he could either ask Adrian for the #, or he could try and buy it from him. I didn't say he WAS doing that, I said that's what would happen if the NFL ruled in his favor.

Thing I don't understand is in the rules it says that 2 years ago the league changed to allow receivers to wear numbers in the teens. This was only because of retired numbers in the eighties & teams carring more receivers and tight ends. So explain Keyshawn Johnson to me? He has been wearing 19 since he was drafted first overall in 1996.

I like that the league stood firm. I like the strucuring of numbers to position. I hope Many Wright changes his number to the 90's. I think Rod Wright will end up with his college number 90 when cuts come around. However I do like that that there is no structure in college ball.

He is one of the guys I was talking about that payed a fine every single game just to wear the number. That's why I say if he wants #5 at LEAST fine him for wearing it (not that they should at all) if you're not just going to let him wear it.

I like how it's not as strict as the NFL, but there should be SOME rules. For example, Doug Flutie should have never worn #20 as a QB, and I don't think offensive linemen should have single-digit numbers, or even low double digits, stuff like that. I definately think RBs should be allowed to wear single digit numbers though (in the NFL, they obviously already can in college).

Man it would be nice to see some of these guys have their college number in the NFL . . I mean just imagine Reggie has that number 5 jersey first game of the season, I mean its just more electric, u really understand who is back there. Its all pretty stupid to me, but oh well.
