Former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller said Tuesday he doesn't understand why Stephen Jackson's teammates are standing by him following a violent incident outside an Indianapolis strip club.

Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air in apparent self-defense early Friday after he was slugged in the mouth and struck by a car that sent him tumbling onto the hood.

Miller, who played 18 years for the Pacers and is the NBA's all-time leader in 3-point goals, spoke out about the incident Tuesday on the Dan Patrick's ESPN Radio show.

"That's ridiculous," Miller said. "That is a black cloud. That is a punch in the gut for [team CEO] Donnie Walsh and [team president] Larry Bird."

The Pacers have an aggressive preseason publicity campaign, with television ads and billboards featuring players and the "It's up to us" slogan.

Even Jackson, who was suspended 30 games for his role in the brawl with Detroit Pistons fans two seasons ago and often was at odds with coach Rick Carlisle last season, talked about spending a summer "soul-searching" and returning with a positive attitude.

The Pacers didn't even make it to their preseason opener before their latest public relations mess. The Pacers have rallied around Jackson, and Miller disagreed with that on Patrick's show.

From what i read on the story, i don't see what jackson did wrong(besides carrying a gun on him). If i get punched in the mouth and get hit by a car for no reason im gonna be pretty pissed off.

yes it is wrong, but he did fire it in the air, after getting suckerpunched(it didn't go into the details in this article, but an article i read earlier in the month made it seem like it atleast) and getting hit by a car.

If he started the altercation or provided them a reason for doing what they did, then my stance is totally different, but from what i gathered i don't think he is in the total wrong(yes he is still at fault for carrying a gun on him in a public place in first place)
 
He is totally wrong. You can go firing guns off. Im sorry.

NBA should suspend him for a while. This is why the NBA has fallen so far so fast. They don't control the trouble-makers. And people wont pay money or tune in to watch THUGS play street ball.

I think that you meant you can't go firing guns off. But yea he needs to be suspended for a while. The NBA is gettin out of control.
 
Guys like Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley are old school. They practiced and worked hard on the court. These young clowns that you have now think they are gangsters and have to carry a gun and run around with their posses until 3 am. It's one of the reasons I don't like the NBA like I once did. :shakeno:

Barkley is a bad, bad comparison :lol:
 
he showed restraint... let someone deliberatly hit ME with a car while I'm carrying and I wouldn't be shooting in the air.

Barkley is "not a role model," but you never saw him dogging it on the court. Off the court he had guys take cheap shots at him in bars and other places to try and get him to fight so they could sue him for $$$$.

i agree. not only did he get sucker punched, but he got hit by a car. im shooting to. Jackson had every right to just straight up shoot them.
 
I have a feeling him getting hit by a car was more like him standing in front of it so the people couldnt drive off, and they slowly moved forward til he got out of the way....

Why wouldn't they do the samething towards Jackson? Of all the guys to go after Stephen Jackson? Did this guy not see him knock out that guy in Detroit?
 
Pacers' Jackson charged in club fight


Stephen Jackson's apology wasn't enough. The Inadiana Pacers guard was charged with the felony and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct Wednesday by the Marion County prosecutor, five days after he fought with another group of men outside a strip club.

On Tuesday, Jackson apologized for the fight, saying he was "happy to be alive." His comments came hours after police arrested another man on several charges related to the fight.

Pacers president Larry Bird said Jackson was upset by the charges.

"He knows it's a major embarrassment for the franchise," Bird said. "This is a big blow for Stephen. He didn't expect this."

Teammates Jamaal Tinsley, Marquis Daniels and Jimmie Hunter were also at the club, but were not charged.

Jackson was hit by a car, and police say he fired a gun in the air at least five times. He originally told police he was punched, but later said he was not, prosecutors said.

"Firing the shots in the air at that point is criminal recklessness," Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said. "Those bullets, once they come up, have to come down, and they come down at least 90 miles per hour, and they do absolutely have the ability to take someone's life."

Brizzi said between 30 and 35 people were in the parking lot.

Jackson was expected to turn himself in Wednesday or Thursday, prosecutors said. He was scheduled to be in court Thursday morning to face the charges. The felony count carries a prison term of six months to three years.
