One big problem we have had on defense for awhile is lack of playmaking. We need guys that will make the big stop on 3rd down, break up the pass, make an interception, get in the backfield, make a sack, force a fumble, etc.

After 3 years, Channing Crowder has just not shown big play ability. I just don't think he plays that way. Will he change? Hard to say. Zach had tremendous attention to detail, leading to great anticipation and he knew how to make plays. Crowder played outside some in the 4-3 and when he went to Mike there was a precipitous drop off from Zach. As a 248 lb inside 'backer in the 3-4, maybe that will be more suited to Crowder. Let's hope so. At the same time, let's not be blind to his lack of playmaking. You cannot give a huge contract to a kid that does not make game changing plays. Zach deserved the big checks, Channing does not. Channing is solid and steady, but not a playmaker and should be paid accordingly. Good salary but not great.

Now who plays alongside Channing? The coaches like Ayodele. The problem is he is not explosive and is basically Channing lite. Not a playmaker by any stretch. It would be nice to plug in a kid next to Channing on the inside who is going to make some plays.

I submit that Reggie Torbor will give us that opportunity. He flies around more than Crowder or Ayodele. He can cover and he can rush. He gives us a much better chance to make plays than Ayodele by a longshot. Maybe Reg is a less steady than Ayodele and that is probably why Sparano and Paul Pasqualoni like Ayodele over Torbor. But I would argue that we already have the steady guy in Channing and someone needs to make a play. I think Reggie is the guy.

The other argument is that Torbor may be a better option off the bench because you can line him up inside or outside. That may be true. But Ayodele earlier in his career played outside too. At this stage, I don't think we remotely want Ayodele outside where his lack of athleticism would be exposed. But it seems like we have some other bodies outside with Porter, Anderson, Moses, Ninkovich, and maybe Roth.

Like wide receiver, this team will need to draft some big time outside linebackers in the next two drafts. Also, I am intrigued about Porter playing inside possibly.

Akin and Crowder are having a good camp and preseason but i agree that we need to see more of this Torbor guy cuz he's everywhere on the field. Its a good thing to have an abundance of talent at linebacker, this defense is going to be real good!

Torbor has basically done nothing, in practice and in pre-season

torbor had 8 tackles his first game, havent checked the stats on yesterdays but his presence has been felt

I'm sure we'll address the LB issue in next years draft. Imagine either Laurinaitus or Maualuga in fins jerseys!!:woot:I know, we'll probably need a top 10 pick to snatch either of them but it's something positive if we don't have such a great season.

Living in NY, I watch the Giants a lot and I've always liked Torbor's game. I think that he's most valuable when he's the backup coming in to replace someone rather than starting. He's very solid.

i don't know what some people want from crowder. he's a sure tackler, smart, and makes sticks on 3rd down.... infact he made a few last night if im not mistaken. ok he doesn't get ints, but that would be more of a db's job. it's like complaining that a rb doesn't get enough receiving yards, it's great to have, but not his job.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a playmaker like Zach back there?

Who do we have who is like Zach?

Is there anyone who might get released who plays like Zach we could pick up?

Damn I wish Dallas would release Zach and we could sign him. It sure would be cool to make Zach Thomas a Dolphin........what?

Oh he was a Dolphin and we released him?

Oh never mind then, obviously the front office doesn't need a LB like Zach Thomas on this defense.

I guess we just stick with Chowder.

Releasing Thomas is like breaking up with your girlfriend BEFORE you have a new one -or- quiting your job BEFORE you have a new one.

Your kinda stuck with Rosie Palm

 Say what?

Look, Torbor is pushing to start. While I think Akin edges him out in the long run, it's ludicrous to say that Torbor hasn't done anything.

Torbor's problem so far to my eyes has been recklessness, but once he reins it in a bit yeah I see him as Akin's replacement.

I have never gotten the sense that these coaches are beholden to Akin Ayodele. You have to remember his history in Dallas with the guys we have at the top of the food chain here. They brought him in for BIG money from Jacksonville, where he made a lot of plays, and then he was a disappointment. Made as many big plays as Channing Crowder did at WLB, which is to say, not many. These guys in charge here in Miami have spent more time being disappointed in Ayodele and having guys like Kevin Burnett steal his playing time, drafting Bobby Carpenter probably because Akin was so disappointing, etc.

From what I hear, the Dolphins were totally targeting Anthony Fasano with that 4th round pick, and they were trying to pry Bobby Carpenter away from the Boys in the same trade. They didn't go for Carpenter but at the last minute suggested Akin Ayodele, since they were probably going to cut him anyway, and Miami said ok. He's been penciled in as a starter here while Reggie Torbor gets acclimated to the system.

You have to remember that Reggie Torbor, Randy Starks and Phil Merling are the main guys that have no history with the concepts and principles of a 3-4 defense. As such, I have perceived them to be the guys that have trained on the slowest among the front seven. Yet, as we stretch on in the preseason, all three seem to be getting better. Langford played 3-4 in college. Roth, Crowder, Holliday, Soliai, Moses and Wright all played under Saban/Capers. Anderson played 3-4 in college I think and he played 3-4 under Capers in Houston for a few years before they went to 4-3. Ferguson and Porter have extensive history with the 3-4, and Ayodele played it two years in Dallas.

I think it's only a matter of time before Torbor takes Ayodele's spot. I don't think they particularly like Akin, he's just a guy they can be comfortable that they know right now and that knows them...but Reggie's the guy they targeted in free agency and gave a sizable contract to. He's the guy they will want to see in there eventually.

It seems as if this regime places high value on role players. Perhaps, basketball offers a good analogy with a highly talented 6th man who's expected to bring a spark to the offense. Sparano alluded to hsi thinking with rotating players, when he discussed trying to determine which RB is better at coming off the bench. Torbor fits the profile of a role player as he was successful with the Giants and Sparano's considers him an excellent inside rusher. As the season progresses, I believe we find that we have a 3-headed inside LB corp with Torbor a key member of pass defense packages.

Moreover, big plays may not be a good metric to evaluate the insider backers. Their effectiveness is likely to be seen by how quickly the defense puts the offense into a 3 down situation and how often inside pressure forces the QB to throw early. Casual observers as myself are more likely to credit the result of the latter to a DB that reacts to such throws and beats the WR to the ball.

The Cowboys love Zach. We'll miss him, what a great role model. The pokes are happy to have him over Ayodele, which speaks for itself.

That said, this was probably a cost savings move although Parcells was probably also frustrated by Zach's injuries. But when you play a stopgap guy like Ayodele, dumping Zach makes less and less sense. Zach would lead.
