Regret over Welker

San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer said he regrets the decision to release receiver/returner Wes Welker early in the 2004 season. Schottenheimer said Welker was waived because injuries forced the Chargers to make room for an extra defensive back.

"I have great regard for him," Schottenheimer said. "I frankly was very disappointed when he ended up leaving."

Welker declined the chance to join San Diego's developmental squad to sign with the Dolphins, where he has emerged as the team's third wide receiver and primary returner.

I am not as high on Welker as everyone else is but he is very good and a solid player.

Welker has solid hands. Very reliable in not muffing punts and catching passes. He had one drop last week but more than made it up with that catch that didnt count in the end zone. He is very versatile, he can even kick field goals. He also CONSISTANTLY returns punts and kicks for decent yardage.

:shakeno:

Name one other kick returner we've had recently who has been even remotely as good as Wes has.

Actually I hate to tell you but Wes is in for a BAAADDD day. I can almost Gurante you he fumbles the ball to us IF we punt to him this week. He doesnt like to fair catch and our punter has the best hang time avg in nfl history.

wes makes great decisions on when to fair catch and when to field it

The only way you wont be punting to him is if you decide to directionally punt every ball out of bounds

considering your offense wont be getting many first downs

Every team releases folks that they 'hope' don't get picked up by other teams ... and sneak by with them on the PS ...

Normally, the coach sees 'potential', but at the time, they aren't good enough to supplant the incumbent ...

We got lucky with Welker ... he is a very solid gamer ... will never be great, but a very solid contributor.

There will be others as well, if our GM is doing his job ... sometimes, just like in baseball, depth keeps you on the sidelines ...
