It is Vonte Davis who ended being the better player it's funny how fickle fans can be with their expectations. Oh yea, Sean Smith zero picks! Hopefully next year he will turn that corner.

Yeah. Vontae exceeded all our expectations I think. He gave up his fair share of plays this year, but man, the dude is a freak. He's exactly the corner I've wanted us to have since Madison and Surtain left. And then to make it better, we have potentially a very good corner on the other side too in Sean Smith.

I don't think "fickle" applies in this case. Smith was clearly the better player in preseason. Smith won the starting job. He also made a pick in the end zone that was nothing short of spectacular. All indications was he would be the better player this year. He should have had an "assist" this past weekend.

The expectations from those on this board were Smith would have at least 4-6 picks. I'm still waiting on number 1.

I like the kid, his physical play leaves alot to be desired though. He tackles like Deion Sanders but doesn't have the coverage skills. He better get his butt in the weight room and watch alot of film this offseason.

Davis I wasn't high on. And I'm glad I was wrong. I love his physical play, but he too needs to watch alot of film this offseason and get ready for the mental aspect of his game for next year.

Picks are great but Smith remains the better corner. If a star corner somehow fell to us I wouldn't be surprised if Vontae ended up at free safety. I think he has the all the attributes to become the next Ed Reed.

Davis at safety? No way.

And Smith isn't the better corner. It just so happens Davis due to his side of the ball gets more match ups against other #1's. Smith has alot of work to do, his tackling is pathetic at best.

That goes to show you that you should forget everything you see in the preseason because it doen't translate ino success in the regular season! BTW you can't make up stats "assists" in support of a player!

i always wanted Vontae Davis last year i wouldnt have minded drafting Sean Smith if vontae wasnt there but if we were to pass on vontae for smith i would have been pissed

Vontae gets tested alot more. Last week in the 2nd half Andre Johnson had 0 catches & Smith was on him for the 2nd half. He is a BIG guy thats why

For the season, Nnamdi Asomugha, the best CB in the league, has 34 tackles and one interception on the season. You don't put up the stats when no one throws at you.

that's the problem. he has been thrown on - and torched - many times this season. and then after he can't seem to get his guy to the ground. i still like his potential but he's taken a big step back since having that spectacular preseason. comparing him and asomugha ... not so much.

Dont be fooled. Vontae has had the big play capability this year and has taken advantage but Sean has been the better corner cover wise. Yeah Sean couldn't tackle any one in a phone booth let alone a football field but he has been tested the least of the two. He has been the most consistent.

I'd be happy if we can get some coverage sacks next season. But some more int's would be great too. But the truth is sometimes int's are a misleading stat. A three and out is just as good in my book. I just want to see our defense stop opposing offenses on any third down pass play actually.

I have a good feeling about both corners next season. After seeing bust after bust at the cb position year after year getting drafted in the first round I only expected one of these guys to make the team never mind be solid contributers. I have no complaints about either one of our rookie cb's and I hope both of them remain starters going into next season.

i don't disagree at all with that. he still needs some work with his technique, hip movement, change of direction, fluidity, and especially tackling - but he has been the more consistent of the two in coverage. vontae has been and will be the better of the two b/c of his freak athleticism and home run potential - not to mention that never to be underestimated short memory - but both have been good given the circumstances. before the season even started i said smith gets a pass from me - unless he completely ****s the bed (which he didn't) - b/c he's only been a corner for a few years and that was in a mickey mouse conference. i just wish i saw noticeable improvement from his as the year progressed, and he's basically gone in the opposite direction. he gets beat out there - beats himself up for it - and then his play suffers even more. dude needs some confidence in a big way. he'll get there IMO.

Well, Sean Smith created two opportunities for interceptions by knocking passes into the hands of our free safety. If Gibril could catch, those would have been huge plays...This is his first year so he is still getting used to the speed. I have no doubt he'll be a good cornerback for us, for a long time.
