Report: Lions hire Schwartz; Bowles staying with Fins

Chris Mortensen and Michael Smith of ESPN are reporting that Jim Schwartz and the Lions have agreed in principle to a deal that will make Schwartz the next head coach of the Lions. Per the ESPN duo, it will be a four year deal.

Gil Brandt, the GM of the Landry-era Cowboys, once said that Schwartz reminded him of a young Belichick and that if he could hire him he’d “hire him in a minute.” Other people according to articles on Schwartz that I have read seem to think that he will be an outstanding NFL head coach. Of the current crop of assistants he seems to me the most likely to be a Walsh or Belichick coach in the 2010s, which is exactly what I think the Jets need in a head coach. Not talking to him shows why the Jets have been mediocre over the last 40 years.

I'm happy that Bowles will wind up staying, but kind of sad for him in a way. because I'm sure he really wanted this opportunity with the Lions. Anyways, it'll be nice to have some continuity on this coaching staff heading into next season.

I fear we're jumping the gun here prematurely with these expressions of relief. The mere fact that he made it to the Detroit final cut, coupled with the spate of new HC signings and impending signings affords Bowles a number of other potential options to elevate his career. Remember, DC would also be an upgrade. The growing buzz about him is positive and visible, so there's certainly no assurance he'll be here when TC starts.

We just dodged one bullet - so far.
