The more I look at the various free agents and how they stack up against the cap, the more I realized that bringing in a guy earning a base salary around 8 million a year (ala Flynn) will make it very difficult to bring even another B level free agent. I think we're going to have to move on from Bell, his cap hit is not worth his inefficiency in coverage. We move on from McDaniel to free up a couple million. Then we have to look at our 3 core guys, Long, Marshall and Dansby. So my question is, if you were to restructure their contracts what would their contracts look like?

Keeping in mind we need to lower our cap hit for this season. Also keep in mind Long will likely net the biggest contract for any offensive tackle and Joe Thomas signed an 8yr/92 mil and 44 guaranteed.

So how would you work the cap to free up space for a couple more pieces in free agency or even to give Wake an extension?

Personally I'd give Jake a back-heavy 6yr/72mil deal with around half of it guaranteed. But I'm struggling to find the ballpark of where Dansby and Marshall would be.

You should be able to grab Flynn for around 5 to 6 mill. Now imagine if Manning where to come to Miami and you had to make room for three Flynn's.

If you pay an unproven QB like Flynn 8M per year, you are crazy. He's done nothing to warrant that kind of money. Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers both earned a base salary of less than 8M a year last year. And you think Flynn is in that company? Not even close. Maybe 5M base if he's lucky and less guaranteed money than the other guys.

A guy like Cassel signed a 6yr/63 mil with 28 guaranteed, which payed him 12 and 12.5 the last 2 seasons.
Kolb got a 5yr/63 mil with 21 guaranteed, which is gonna result in a 10 mil cap hit this year.
Fitzpatrick just signed a new contact for 6 yr/59 mil, with 24 mil guaranteed. It's gonna cost them 6, 10.5, 10.5, 10.5, 9.5 and 9.5 against the cap for the duration.

All these quarterbacks are comparable, albeit have much more experience than Flynn and are making in between 6-12 annually. Plus the articles I looked at projected Flynn to be valued around a 5yr/40mil sort of contract, which I agree is right. Even with a 6 mil a year contract or so it'd be interesting to see how we structure it. Something along the lines of 5yr/30 mil with 15 guaranteed and a breakdown of say 4, 6, 6, 8, 8. If that gets the job done then I'm happy.

But the Flynn contract isn't the point of the thread, I wanna know what Marshall's value is against the cap this year realistically, along with Dansby if we can restructure their high cap hits.

And although their base salary was 7.5 for Brees and 7.25 respectively, their cap hits were both over 10 mil for the season and increasing.

good luck getting marshall to restructure anything. im not a big fan of paying flynn big money but if philben likes him tha much i give him benefit of doubt

Yea but I'm pretty sure that includes a 20 mm dollar signing bonus, and signing bonuses you can spread out over the duration of the contract as you please as far as the cap hit goes, so you back load it and pay less up front

Bill Polian was on NFL radio today and said that this will be the year to sign free agents..With the lockout last year and all he said that 2nd tier free agents should be had for bargains.

A standard restructure of Jake Long will net about $6,000,000 in free cap space, which gives you one top tier free agent :)

Bell will have to restructure or get cut. He does not deserve that type of money...We can easily replace him, and he is a liability in coverage anyways. I'm sure Croyle can find us a decent SS (R.Jones) and FS. We need to bring in new talent, we are too caught up in keeping some players that simply dont deserve to be here. Mcdaniels is good, but hes getting paid too much to come off the bench, lets find younger hungry players who can do the same for a lot less. We need to be smart, and if Flynn is our guy WHY NOT PAY HIM?? We need a QB! Manning is a huge risk, but if hes healthy WE HAVE TO PAY HIM TOO!!! So what does it matter? Do you honestly think Manning is gonna come down for the vet min? NO!!!! hes gonna want his $$$!!! even if its incentive based!!

If the coach wants to go after Flynn, then he is betting is coaching future on him and he would be worth it. If they lean more towards Manning, then that tells you what we need to know. Thankfully, we have the one guy who can give us an honest assessment of Flynn.

Jones is a strong safety, he's been playing out of position.

I really dont think we need to restructure anyone. If we cut Bell and let Soilia walk, we will have more than $20 million in cap space. That's plenty of room to sign a few FA's (including Flynn) and all of our draft picks. The only reason we would have to restructure anyones contract would be if we brought in Peyton Manning, which I dont see happening.

And you can't restructure Jake Longs contract as another poster said. He is in his final year and there is nothing to retructure - you have to pay him or cut him. He could be given an extension, but not a restructure.

Solai doesn't count against the cap, he's a FA. We need to restructure a few contracts and cut some contracts to have any chance at a couple impact FA's.

Restructuring Long's contract is another way of saying extend him. You're restructuring your cap hit.

And whoever said letting Soliai walk will have us up to $20,000,000 misunderstands the number. As of RIGHT NOW, we have $9,000,000. That's without Soliai. That's without Langford. That's with everyone who is a free agent UNSIGNED
