Practice Squad
This is my first post on FinHeaven! Honestly, I know there are glaring holes on defense, but let me break a few offensive things down.
I feel that the Dolphins can solve many of the defensive struggles by simply keeping their defense fresh and rested. In a rebuilding stage, Miami should focus on three things:
1) Time of possession is incredibly important. If Miami can focus on running the ball more, they can run the clock, keep the defense resting on the sideline, and keep the opposing offense OFF the field; it's pretty damn tough for offenses to score from the bench.
2) The depth on the offensive line is key to their rebuilding. Miami would be better off not going for the huge stars on the offensive line, but moreso going for numbers. If they have enough decent players to run a few fresh legs in every set of downs, then they might be better off than going for having one stellar group.
3) Lastly, find Nick Saban and slit his throat for driving Miami into the ground. Wannstedt and Jimmy Johnson might have had issues making/staying in the playoffs, but if I remember correctly, the years Wannstedt the Dolphins he left with an overall winning record. On the other hand, Saban had a 15-17 record in two seasons, and he's a liar on top of that. :fire:
I propose a few questions for other members for the Dolphins' draft-day decisions.
1) The Dolphins need a QB. No secret. What would it hurt to trade that 6th-round pick from New Orleans (for Mare) for Trent Green, knowing he only has a few years left, to mentor the quarterback they draft? Quinn won't fall to 9th, and the Dolphins will not trade up for him, I promise. Let me say that I would probably splooge the second that the Dolphins drafted Quinn, but I don't see it happening. Regardless of Quinn, I feel that it would be better for them to hold out on drafting a QB until their second 2nd round pick, where Michigan State's Drew Stanton should still be available. Stanton is NOT a running QB, but is known for being a good scrambler. Behind a known shakey line, would it not seem smart to have someone that could protect himself and escape?
2) The Raiders will pick Calvin Johnson, only because Al Davis is a tard. If the Raiders really wanted to improve they should have snatched up Jeff Garcia at QB (a phenomenal west-coast offense QB), then trade down to a 4-6 range and grab an extra 2nd or 3rd out of it, draft Adrian Peterson, and use the extra pick on offensive line. Then, holy crap, they've got something going offensively. Regardless, the odds of the Raiders taking positive steps with this draft are about as good as the Lions not having a top-ten first-round pick...ever. Ok so after my Raider-Rant, I ask, if the Dolphins did get offered a trade that would put them into a position that would allow them to draft Calvin Johnson, should they go for it? CJ opposite Chambers with McMichael in the middle, and quite possibly the two-headed monster of Ricky and Ronnie in the backfield...That is an offense that would spread defenses thinner than Calista Flockhart. Yeah, the line is shakey, but the defenses wouldn't be in a position to stack the line, which would further help with line issues. So the question I propose is, if the Dolphins get put in position to get Calvin Johnson, and already will have Trent Green in the bank, do they take CJ, or pass him over for an offensive or defensive lineman?
3) Who thinks Nick Saban should be scalped? :fire:
Lastly, I'll give what I feel would be the top picks the Phins could legitimately have in their pocket following day one.
Round 1, Pick 1 - (From Raiders) WR Calvin Johnson
Round 2, Pick 8 - (Traded to Raiders with #9 for top pick)
Round 2, Pick 28 - (From Patriots) Drew Stanton
Round 3, Pick 7 - either ND's Ryan Harris or Marshal Yanda from Iowa (O-Line needs help)
The odds of that trade to #1 overall are pretty slim, but it's what I feel the Dolphins could do. Any thoughts on my draft projection? It isn't really a projection; it's actually more of a hope/thought. I love CJ and think he and Chambers would terrorize defenses together. I think the Dolphins really are only 3-4 players away from taking the division by storm next year, and all are attainable on draft day.
Any thoughts?
