In the the final tally, the only thing that really matters in football is scoring. Everything else is fantasy football.

Currently, the MIA offense is ranked #12 in the NFL with 24.9 points per game (PPG) and the MIA D is ranked #10 giving up 21.6. These are playoff level figures.

However, over the past four games, the MIA O is now averaging 29 PPG, while the D is only surrendering 17.

Very few teams go into Week 9 of the season any hotter.

The #12 ranking in scoring is a bit misleading. We have had so many defensive TD's and short fields that are helping that ranking. When we don't get any turnovers we are scoring 17 per game on offense. Buffalo 10, Green Bay 24

Would you be as excited if you understood that the Miami O only scored 13pts against a very weak Jag team last week? The O is actually averaging 23.75ppg, over the last four games, for the record.

Peyton Manning and the Broncos, with a very high powered offense, have ended a drive with either a touchdown or field goal attempt 36 times and punted 36 times for a 50/50 ratio. Meaning half the time Denver gets the ball they're going have an opportunity to score. Miami on the other hand has ended a drive with either a td or fga 32 times and punted only 26 times for a 55/45 ratio.

So in theory Miami's offense is just as effective as Denver's when it comes to moving the ball, the Dolphins just need to do a better job closing the deal. The Dolphins have 16 offensive touchdowns and 16 field goal attempts. Denver has 28 td's and 8 fga's. So Denver has three times more td's than field goal attempts while Miami is 50/50. If the Dolphins can get their ratiofor closing drives up to 60/40 in the second half of the season this could be a playoff team.

Really, gregorygrant? you act like "closing the deal" is just a minor thing we need to fix. That actually goes to the VERY HEART of what "moving the ball" means! Miami is nowhere close to Denver there. Of Miami's 76 possessions that resulted in scores, turnovers, or punts only 21% resulted in Touchdowns. Of Denver's 80 possessions, 35% ended in TDs. That's a whopping 67% more than Miami! It's what separates teams in the NFL- being able to score TDs or settling for FGs. Also, Miami has 10 turnovers while Denver has 4.
Bottom line is that Denver is MUCH more effective at moving the ball, which you would expect from the #1 offense.

BTW, I support Tannehill and think the Dolphins have the potential to get it done.

oh, and Denver ranks #1 in yds per play (6.2) where Miami ranks #20 (5.4) We still have quite a ways to go to approach Denver's efficiency.

Looking at our wins and loses this season, if we score 27 we win anything less we lost... I'd say that's a good target each week with this defense playing well

I think we can all agree that Miami's O is much improved in coaching, talent, and potential. However, it has been overly inconsistent so far this year.

I think the same can be said of our D, to a lessor degree, and our special teams as well.

MANY factor to consider with a new O, injury, suspension, etc. The next 4 games should tell the Dolphins tale for 2014.

Moving the ball and closing the drive are two different things. The first step is consistently getting into scoring position. The second step is closing out the drive. Miami is getting pretty good at the first step, the second step takes time. Miami does a good job setting up the sales meetings, they just don't do a good job closing the deal. Of course teams with Manning, Rodgers, Brady and Brees are going to do a much better job at closing out drives than Miami does.

very true. It's kind of exciting and fun- we don't really know how good this team can be. We've seen them play VERY WELL against VERY GOOD teams (NE and GB), just not consistent.

If they can play at that level more consistently, they can be very good. I say "more consistently", because if they did it consistently this would be a Super Bowl team and very few teams can play at that level consistently.

Yes. Scoring is scoring. Ask JAX.

BTW, that O PPG is five points higher than our combined O & D PPG last year.

Agreed. That is part of why I am excited. If MIA can put this many PPG on teams while being inconsistent, imagine what MIA can do once they fully digest this O.

Well then the Patriots should not be given so much offensive credit since the lead the league in turnovers at +11 I believe or something close to that.

Statistics can be used to support any agenda you want. There is always another side of the coin.

All I want to see is the offense getting consistently better as time goes on. When you score 14 points vis defense that changes the perspective of the gameplan to some degree. You run the ball more. You run high percentage completion plays.

the defense is loaded with talent.

And for those who say Jamar Taylor sucked last week should look at the game agan. one for you hayden.

Agreed. The O has had half a season to absorb the O, injuries and suspensions are pretty much over with, and the young guys are now almost vets. I am expecting the light to go on in the very near future, and really looking forward to when they do. This team "can" be scary.

Yeah, anyone who does not see that potential has been watching games on the radio.

Wait, are people deflating the PPG because we have scored 3 Defensive TDs? That's just dumb. Scoring points comes from all 3 phases of the game. When your defense scores then your team benefits massively from that. No one is or should be blinded by the miscues this team suffers on the offensive end, but no one should deflate PPG just because the defense has the ability to put up some points. 12th in Offensive scoring is top half of the league (http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/total/sort/totalPointsPerGame). Know the deficiencies you suffer from and work with them to correct them. Take a good stat and enjoy it. The upside is much greater than the downside right now. This team looks abysmal at times yet still puts up a good amount of points as a team.
