It's good. And when you factor in undrafted free agents that made the team, it's very good. It sucks that we've missed on some early round picks. But getting that many starters over the last 3 years is a rare thing in the NFL. No front office is perfect. But after years of Wannstedt & Cameron busts, this FO is a breath of fresh air.

i can only quote Bill Polian whenever someone brings up the draft. he once said finding two starters in a draft is a very good job, three is tremendous.

The Trifecta has also succeeded in finding good undrafted guys that make the team. If you add in players like Bess, Carpenter plus this year's prospects of Moore, Wallace and Johnson, it improves the batting average further.
Pat White and Turner didn't work out but it actually gives me confidence that the Trifecta are able to pull the plug after one year and admit to the errors rather than plow on for another year or two in hope and waste the time and the roster spots. Good leaders have the ability to quickly recognize their errors and correct them.

An average of 3 starters a draft is pretty good. Other than the picks of pat turner and white, we had a fairly solid draft.

There are a lot of factors to consider. How good (or bad) was the team before the 3 drafts? It would be easier for a draft pick this year to make the Rams team than the Saints. Miami was the worst team in the NFL when these 3 drafts started, hence the 1st overall pick. The draft is certainly not a science, no one hits all their picks. The very best anyone can do is to recognize their mistakes early, admit them, cut their losses and move on. How long do you try to make a starting QB out of a Rex Grossman or a Matt Leinart? I give the Dolphins credit for admitting the picks they missed on and moving on. Do we really want to keep trying to make a QB out of Pat White?

Well said. You have to factor in Bess, Carpenter, Moore, Wallace and Johnson. You hate to miss on White and Turner, but at least the front office didn't keep them over more talented players. They essentially admitted their mistakes early on.

That was part of a brainy experiment. Our offensive minds (both Henning and Lee) were trying to change the face of the wildcat, adding a QB with spread option experience. So during April of 2009 they picked Pat White, a different player of WVU with leadership and explosive skills.

All changed when Chad Pennington went down and we needed to trade for a backup, with the family linkage between Bill Parcells and Scott Pioli, Tayler Thigpen was an easy trade. His arrival opened up a double curtain. On one side he's a fine backup for regular offense, but also fits spread options very well. So Henning and Lee got a new component for their experiments.

During that time Pat White proved insufficient for the Pro-level as a passer and a fragile target while running. So counting with Tayler, Pat was unnecessary.

it's good that these guys aren't stubborn about their own picks and FA's. everybody misses, too many guys are playing in this league only because where they were picked or who picked them.

I'm happy with a few busts(white, turner) as long as there are studs as well...Long is already one and if Vontae can become one then that will help me forget about the bad/questionable picks

It just seems to bother me, that I never understood the trifecta's reasoning or anaysis on the Merling or White picks. White makes no sense for their type of player( wildcat or not) and Merling is not a 3-4 end.

Busts happen. 2009 was a weak draft class. You can point to players you'd rather have than White, but the three that immediately come to mind are L. McCoy, M. Wallace, and M. Massaquoi, and none seemed like slam-dunk prospects. I wanted C. Barwin, and he's not looking like he'll be all-everything any time soon. Would have been nice to have L. Murphy instead of P. Turner, but it's easy to 2nd guess. Very few people liked the Hartline pick, and I think he'll be a great compliment to Marshall and Bess - 16.9 YPC is no joke.

Is this good, bad, or average? I do not know.

I bolded the picks that most of us were extremely confused over. Hartline has been a nice surprise, and hopefully Nalbone and Carroll will start one day. But for the most part, each of those picks were a huge swing and miss. Why does it seem so obvious to us that guys like Shawn Murphy, Pat White, and JD Folsom won't ever be productive players, but the FO sees otherwise? Thankfully, we've had a number of solid undrafted players make the roster.

Hopefully from now on, the FO saves its flyer picks for the later rounds and mimics teams like the Steelers - picking low-risk players in the first 3 rounds. I'm sick of watching 2nd and 3rd round picks get cut after only a season or two.
