“I know this might be a little illegal, guys, but you put a little spray, a little stickum on them, to make sure that texture is a little sticky,” Rice said, laughing. It wasn’t a little illegal, it was a lot illegal. As explained in the ESPN feature, gloves were introduced to football after the NFL decided to outlaw the stuff that guys like Fred Biletnikoff and Lester Hayes (pictured) would spread copiously on their hands, and elsewhere. Rice admitted in the feature that he enhanced the surface of gloves approved for use in the NFL with a substance that would make it easier to catch the ball.

As a kid I always admired this catch. Not so much anymore.

What's next? Marino admitting his arm was actually a bionic cannon?

We used stickum on our hands in high school. Works great just don't rub your eyes or scratch your balls. Burns like hell :chuckle:

I wouldn't doubt that there is some picture floating around of you with one hand glued to your eye and another glued to your nuts, screaming bloody murder!

Luckly no camera phones or U tube back then.

:bobdole: You would think that he would remember that he admitted that in that interview before he called out the Pats for cheating.

I don't care how many other players were doing it at the time, you cheated Jerry Rice and I am disappointed in you.

as a receiver he used a banned substance, but how many guys are using steroids? I think at this point, we have to admit there is nothing pure about football.

every team and most players are always looking to gain an edge, this is why I think the Pats stuff is nonsense. the SF teams under Bill Walsh scripted their first 15-25 plays and Walsh would have his headset go out in big games so the opponent had to remove their headset and made it more difficult to adjust. NE bends the rules like any team is trying to, NE is just dumb enough to keep getting caught.

Football isn't pure, but I tend to hold the great players to a higher standard.

Trying to gain an edge within the rules is one thing. Breaking rules to do so is another. Rules are in place to make it an even field. Everyone isn't cheating in the same way, or else there would be no reason for certain teams to consistently do it. Unless every NFL team / player is breaking the same rule, someone is gaining an advantage. If everyone is doing it, then the rule should be changed. If not, teams found to be in violation of the rules should be punished.

every team is trying to gain an edge whether it's not putting a tarp on the field to slow an opponent, stick um, steroids/PEDs, video taping, ...

what NE did had no bearing on wins and losses, it is just a chance for jealous, whiny fans of other teams to try to bring them down since they cannot do it on the field.

As long as it is within the rules, you can do all the edge gaining you want. I don't know exactly what NE did in regards to this latest deflatgate. I don't know exactly what they did during spygate, but Goodell getting rid of the tapes makes me think that what was on them likely had a bearing on wins and losses. If NE has been deflating footballs for who knows how long, it gave them an advantage. How many games would they have won anyways? I don't know. 1 dropped pass, or 1 fumble during a game can make a huge difference. No matter what, the point is that they had an advantage over the other teams who are following the rules didn't.

It would be like me racing an Olympic sprinter and he constantly starts running on "On your mark". I don't care if he would have won regardless. We both start on go, or else you're a cheater.

NE brings themselves down when they cheat. If their cheating didn't have a bearing on wins and losses, then they wouldn't cheat.

other teams taped too including Miami under Jimmy Johnson who admitted it. stick um was illegal, what Walsh did w/ the headsets was illegal. Pitt was notorious for steroid use in the 70s(not sure if was illegal back then), Den violated the cap in their SB winning seasons, etc... this stuff happens all the time which is why teams aren't going crazy to attack NE.

I don't brush aside any of that. I have an issue with any team that violates the rules. I'm not sure what the rules were for taping signals then, or if steroid use was illegal then either. I do know the league specifically sent a memorandum when NE was taping and told them to stop. They continued to do so. On top of that, I don't think it was just taping signals. Why else would you destroy the tapes that prove it was just that?

Other teams that violate the rules don't make it any better. Unless you can prove that every team / player is doing the exact same thing, it gives the team violating the rules an unfair advantage.

I think they destroyed them b/c many teams were doing it.

teams will always look for an edge. to act like NE became a dynasty b/c of this is silly. NE and Mia taped signals, NE won 3 SBs, Miami lost 38-3 and 62-7 in the playoffs.(I am not taking a shot at Miami, just noting how NE didn't win b/c of taping or any of the other nonsense).
