This is purely my idea, not something I've heard, but with his vision, size, strength, and speed does anyone else think he could be a hell of a kick returner, not punt, but kickoff...

If we didn't have Ronnie I wouldn't even consider this as an option, but if you look at it purely from business terms he is playing for the vet min. Most of the coverage team on a kick off are secondary, wr, and a few backup LB normally. Ricky may not break one for a TD, but I bet he would be one hell of a consistant big play returner.

any thoughts?

He'd be a damn good one, but I'd make sure it was in the Super Bowl and that's it.

Its a special skill, I think we're better off with Welker.

I would rather have Welker in there...he is quicker, smaller....and we can't afford to lose Ricky compared to Welker who is a little more expendable. I also worry about Ricky fumbling it as he is not use to running back kicks whereas Wes usually will hold on to it.

I would like to see it once or twice in the regular season as a trick play with him and welker back their.

try a reverse or one of those lateral throws all the way across the feild you used to see in the good old days of football.

I said this at begining of the season. I got alot of - negative - feed back. and somebody wanting me band for thinking that. RW did it in the Pro Bowl and had some luck with it .

Gotta love this site. (wasnt me)

His hands are too small to catch a ball thrown softly 10 feet away and you want him to catch a ball kicked 100 feet into the air and coming down in swirling winds?

He isnt a bad receiver, I would rather not risk him on special teams though. Especialy when we have Wes.

My thoughts would be, assuming he plays back at the level he was before (which the indications are that he will), why take a PB running back and put him on the return team...a position he has never played ?? I don't see that happening unless RB takes control of the position and doesn't give him the opportunity as a TB...even then, since he's never returned balls, he'd have to learn the job during the season ?? I doubt it...

As far as RB doing it...I also doubt that too....He hopefully will be used a lot in various offensive plays...If RW returns to his old form, and Brown shows that he can play the slot WR position occasionally, that could be a lethal setup with both of those guys in the same backfield....both can catch the ball well, RW more as a dump off or screen guy and Brown better in the slot, H-back or 2nd TE situation...either could run the ball from that set..and they could both be on the field for 3 downs, in the situation of being behind and in the "pass" mode...could be exciting...

Not just Ricky having small hands, but he's way too big to be a good return guy. He's what? 225-230 now? He's purely a great runner with ok hands, special teams are a bit different. You need different instincts and things of the such. I just don't think he'd be a good one.

even in special teams play it is important to have the best 11 players on the field that can make an impact.

The kickoff is one play in the game when every team has an equal opportunity to take one to the house. Use some enginuity and you can create something special with kickoff returns.

just having teams concerned with having ricky back their would take some of the heat off of Welker.

keep following me on this.

Ricky and welker back on a kickoff return. Welker catches the ball and heads up field toward whichever sideline he is furthest from (not east or west, but kinda NE or NW if you follow what I mean) mean while ricky goes to the opposite side of the feild staying slightly behind (deeper) than welker.

the coverage team would either have to dedicate two to three players to cover Ricky's side of the feild in case of a backward pass all the way across the field from welker, or they have to basically ignore Ricky and all attack welker.

Whether he gets to return any or not, the threat of him back their could open things up for Welker.

Of course to create the threat he would need to return a few here and there.
