This article insinuates that Ricky is eligible to come back to the Dolphins Jan. 15th.

How long is the ban for? Is it for the caledar year? If so, we could actually get Ricky back for the playoffs. He knows the offense and he'd stay in football shape by playing in Canada.

This would be huge if it's true. If he was suspended in December 05, is he eligible to come back Jan 07? He would need to ask for reinstatement and the league would get to decide that correct?

Anyone know the details here? Having a back like Ricky added to our playoff roster would be huge....

And if we got a 1st round bye (I know, getting ahead of ourselves) we wouldn't play our first game until Jan 15th...right?

I believe a one year ban goes one year from the day he was suspended, so I don't think he would be eligible for reinstatment until April 2007.

That would be too insane to be possible.

It sounds more likely to me that the CFL guys are just saying that guys that are signed in the CFL have the opportunity to leave the CFL for the NFL in a window between January 1st and February 15th...but if they don't leave for the NFL during that window, they are obligated to fulfill their CFL contract obligations and can't leave the CFL to play in the NFL without lawsuit.

The CFL and NFL no doubt have some real crazy whacky agreements with each other in order to divide up the players.

Miami isn't taking any chances though, they want it in writing that no matter the length of the contract Ricky signs with the Argos, they will cut him after the league year ends in November...so that he will no longer have any contractual obligations to anyone in Canada.

imagine that, we win the division and get Ricky Williams for the playoffs !! Teams will be scared.

Last I heard, a year's suspension is not a fiscal year but a season. That would include all pre-season games, regular season games and post season. BTW, nothing is guaranteed for next year... Ricky needs to apply for re-instatement. Onterrio Smith's (Vikings) re-instatement application was denied by the NFL... I hope I'm wrong!

BTW, I think that "window of opportunity" is something that is contractual in nature to the CFL, meaning if Ricky signed a 1 year deal to play there tomorrow he isn't obligated to stay an Argonaut until May 20, 2007.

You're right, he does have to apply for reinstatement and he could be denied, however it is not thought that he will be denied reinstatement or given any trouble, especially considering the circumstances surrounding this positive test.

I thought the suspension triggered the day he failed the test. The event that took place in April was an appeal to have the decision reveresed.

It'd be nice to know exactly when the suspension officially starts.

Can you imagine waht an advantage it would be to get a fresh Ricky Williams (whose Canadian season would end in november), for our Superbowl push? Ronnie Brown will likely need some rest time.

The kicker, to me, will be the fact that Ricky needs to apply for reinstatement. Would the league upset the balance of the the season by approving Rick's reinstatement. You know the rest of the league will protest.

I don't think he was "officially" suspended until after the appeal. It's not like a jail sentence. I think they allow an appeal to be heard before they hand down a final ruling.

I don't think it's based on the calendar I think it's wholly-based on the season. He will miss one entire season of activities and revenues. If he were allowed to attend mini-camps or training camp, he would have to be paid for them (yes you get paid a certain amount for non-voluntary camps). He would have to get paid for preseason games. He would have to get paid for season games and he would have to get paid for post-season games I believe. I think when the league bans you for a season, you can't be reinstated until the beginning of the league's next fiscal year, which also marks the start of free agency.

That sounds about right. Too bad too. I thought maybe this was a loop hole Saban had found in the rules and that was why Saban and the Fins were okay with Rick going to the CFL - he could stay in shape and then join the team when it counts in January.

Oh well.

Ricky Williams is still under contract with the Miami Dolphins and is still therefore a Miami Dolphin. Since this is a Miami Dolphins message board I don't think it's unreasonable that the Miami Dolphins fans on the Miami Dolphins message board would be talking about Miami Dolphins players.

If Saban didn't give a rats @ss about Williams, he would have said sure fine go to the CFL who really cares you're never going to suit up for us again anyway. But he didn't. He doesn't want Williams to get hurt. Why? Because Williams is going to be suiting up for us in 2007 and 2008.

That's just the way it is. Let's move on and accept it.
