Pat Riley has scheduled a Monday afternoon press conference where he is expected to step down as coach of the Miami Heat, but remain in the role of team president. Riley has two more seasons remaining on a contract that gives him the leeway to serve in the dual role or exclusively as president.

Riley's announcement comes on the heels of his postseason meeting with Heat owner Micky Arison. Riley, 63, is coming off the worst season of his 25-year coaching career, having guided the Heat to a 15-67 record, which matched the worst finish in the franchise's 20-year history.

New conference scheduled for today at 4 PM EST. Spoelstra expected to be named as the replacement today as well.

He did what he said he would do, namely bring a championship to Miami. One of the greats of all time.

I think he's making the same mistake he made back in '03 when he stepped down and they ended up getting Wade and Shaq. They have a chance at getting a really special player in this year's draft and they could be contenders as soon as next year with a healthy D-Wade.

If that happens, I can see Spoelstra having a family problem and stepping down and Riley will be back by 2009. :rolleyes2:

Yep....Riley is not done for good. His ego won't allow it.

sad day for the heat. i'll be happy if he comes back in two years tho. spolestra will still get a job somewhere else

I guess it is true what they say about Riley, "when the going gets tough, Riley gets going". I'm sick and tired of this nonsense by Riley. Hes had a good eye for talent, but I want him to be relieved of all his roles. What he did to Stan was bad enough and now once again he decides to step back when the Heat struggle. This is not how a HOFer should act. Thanks for the ring Riley, but enough is enough.

Erik Spoelstra???? HUH????
Everyone said the same thing about SVG when he came in, BUT, Erik Spoelstra is a very smart X's and O's guy. He mentioned he will stick with what we have been doing defensively because it has worked, and I believe he mentioned about running a more up tempo offense and thinks the team can make some noise if Miami stays healthy.

Also mentioned that Wade called him up congratulating him and was very excited having him as the next coach. The players love this guy.

Might be contenders but I don't think for next year. Though with the East, it doesn't take much. Need to shore up the bench, keep Marion and get a few more starters before the Heat are back atop the SE Division.

Riley isn't going anywhere....because of what hes done for the franchise and because hes a part owner of the team.

I'm sure Spoelstra is thanking him for sticking around through this mess of a season and handing him a clean slate next year. The only holdovers from the Riley era are Wade and 'Zo....if he decides to stick around for another year. Hes got a team coming off a horrible season with diminished expectations, a healthy Wade, Marion, and a top pick. It would be tough to think of a better situation to start out in as a head coach.

Shaq & Wade brought a Championship to Miami, Riley was along for the ride.

As soon as the team is rebuilt and looks like a contender again(which may not be too far off) he'll find his way back.
