The Houston Rockets have hit a glitch in their attempts to finalize the trade that would send Rudy Gay and Stromile Swift to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for veteran swingman Shane Battier. The glitch? Swift told the Rockets point blank that he would not report to Memphis. He walked away from the Grizzlies last summer to sign as a free agent in Houston, but his uninspired play has caused the Rockets to re-think the 17.4 million they have wrapped up in Swift. When the Grizzlies emerged as interested in having him back, the Rockets were only too happy to oblige.
So now that Swift is stubbornly refusing to go back to Memphis - and a player has 36 hours to report after a trade or the trade is rescinded - the Grizzlies have revealed that they have a bigger plan in mind. The idea is that Swift would not stay in Memphis, where Jerry West just drafted the highly-touted Alexander Johnson, but rather be a part of an additional deal. Swift winds up somewhere else, while the Rockets end up getting an additional player as part of the three-team package.
Looks like the Gay and Swift for Battier deal could not happen at all.
I still think that Gay will be a Grizzlie and Battier will be a Rocket.
Be awesome if they just call the whole thing off and Rockets changed ther eminds and kept Gay.
