Rodney Harrison might be retired, but his allegiances to the Patriots have stretched into his tenure as an NBC television analyst.

NBC hired Harrison and former Colts coach Tony Dungy on Wednesday to work on its Sunday night NFL telecast. And his first major pronouncement as an analyst: That Tom Brady is a better leader than Peyton Manning.
Harrison pointed to Manning's recent criticism of the Colts in the wake of the departure of coaches Tom Moore and Howard Mudd. I'm not sure everybody's on the same page in this building," Manning said. "I'm just trying to focus on playing quarterback well."

Manning may have been upset, but Harrison said he was wrong to have aired his concerns publicly.

"This is something I've discussed with coach Dungy and I think it gives Tom Brady the edge over Peyton Manning in terms of leadership," Harrison said. "If this went on in New England, it wouldn't come out publicly. He wouldn't make a big fuss over it.

He has got a point but I don't know how he can say Brady is a better team leader than Manning without having played on the same team as both. Even then, with Harrison playing defence, I'm not entirely sure he could know from first hand on field experience. Having written that, he may well be completely right.

Drawing on his vast experience playing with Manning.

Yeah Tom Brady never messes up, NE is great and nothing is ever done wrong up there.

Exactly the point I was going to make. If Harrison has never played on Manning's team, he couldn't possibly know anything about his leadership.

The Colts are Peyton Manning. They've been successful with him and weren't before he was there. Having James, Harrison, Wayne, Clark, etc. certainly is a bonus too of course.

I agree that the Colts are nothing without Manning, but I can see what Harrison is saying. This is not the first time Manning has done some finger pointing that probably should have been done behind closed doors rather than in public. I remember a few years ago when Peyton threw his offensive line under the bus, essentially blaming them for a playoff loss to the Steelers after the favored Colts lost. And as far as Harrison having never played with Manning, don't coaches and general managers - as well as media and fans - make determinations about about qualities like that before a player joins the team all the time?

In some situations, it might be end up being a positive to publicly call out a player or section of the team. I'm not saying it always is, or necessarily was in the situation you mentioned, but Manning knows those guys a lot better than any of us and has more of an idea how they would react to his doing that. Did they play better afterwards? If so, can part of that be attributed to Manning's public shaming of them? It might not make him popular but could have been an effective tactic. A good leader isn't always (or necessarily often) popular but has to be effective.

They do but there's always a certain amount of guesswork involved. If there wasn't, everybody drafted in the first round would turn into a productive player for the team which drafted him.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
