That's horrible. I hope he can make a full recovery.
Will be surprised if he is able to coach though, I have had to watch several family members battle cancer. They all did a heroic job, but none looked ready to coach an NFL team
It's a skin cancer.. the more aggressive of two types. I've had both on my face, (don't use sun reflectors at the beach when you're young kiddies!) but the squamous does need to be taken care of in a timely manner because it can multiply quickly. But these are skin layer removals and really, unless your job is strenuous, you should be back at work the next day or so.
