I've heard a lot of questions about Ronnie in the fullback role. He's too light, he'll get too banged up, etc.

Has anyone here ever questioned Sammy Morris's position as a backup fullback on the team?

Morris is 6'0" and weighs 218 pounds.

Ronnie is 6'0" and weighs 232 pounds.

I'm not saying I want Ronnie pounding himself into a linebacker on every play, but he's certainly got the size to play FB in the NFL, and his ability to play that position, at least some of the time, would really open up our offense with Ricky on the field.

I don't either -- that's the job for guys like Rex Hadnot, who weigh 300 pounds themselves. A fullback's role is to lead through the hole and hit the LB waiting to tackle the RB. The average LB weighs about 240.

Sounds like you decided what you were going to say just from reading the title of the thread.

he won't be great at FB, but he won't be terrible by any means. mike alstott has managed to be a starting fullback for a while in tampa and he is a TERRIBLE blocker. brown will be lined up at FB, i imagine, a lot when r. williams returns. a lot of nice fakes and tosses and fake tosses will make things fun for the opposing defense

pretty much...i was thinking of using him and ricky in 3 back sets...but i'm not the coach....but seriously....if ronnie is our future...we dont want to wear him down now with runblocking for a couple of seasons

brown has much better potential to block than morris and size, that being said it probably wont happen

Right, but I'm talking about selected plays where he and Ricky are in the backfield. If he can at least function well as a FB on those selected plays (maybe 3 a game), then it makes the defense have to defend the running plays up the gut that need a FB lead blocker. That opens up other stuff for the offense.

2nd pick in the draft for a fullback?
That would be ridiculous.
Saban would never allow it
Another person who seemingly read only the title of the thread and then decided on his reply....

unless he is carrying the ball, or frerotte is about to get buried, i dont want ronnie touching linebackers...and yes i read your whole starting statement

Not for 3 plays a game huh? All that would do is keep the defense honest through the middle of the field when Ricky and Ronnie are in the backfield together. If the LBs have to line up to account for running plays up the middle, they're in less of a position to defend screens and other passes to the RBs. In other words, Ronnie's 3 plays a game at FB are the difference between our averaging about 8-10 yards per screen to a RB and averaging 5-7 yards.

im not against having him on the field at the same time as ricky, i think its a great idea, and his return is only going to help our offensive and ronnies development. that being said he can be used in many ways, split out wide in the slot, heck he can line up as fb and runa dive play, i just dont want him lead blocking, hes a 20 million dollar investment, let the big boys do the dirty work

quick hitting plays like dives or inside trap plays and what not dont need a lb, so i dont see much to jusitfy the risks
