Ronnie Brown is key to the Offense

Amidst all the buzz around Ted Ginn, some people may have forgotten that Ronnie Brown is going to be the focal point of Cameron's offense this coming season. Ronnie Brown envisions being used like Ladanian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers. He's been studying tons of tape on him and hopes to acheive some of the success that L.T. has enjoyed. Im both confident and optimstic that he can do so in Cam Cameron's offense. Why? Consider the following:

Committment to the Run: Anyone who watched the majority of the games last year knows very well that Mike Murlarkey consistently abandon the run late in games, even when Ronnie was averaging 4.8 yards a carry. In the Cheifs game it was 3rd and 1 and he called a double reverse which resulted in a fumble! We couldeve won at least 2 more games if we ran the ball more. Rest assured Cam will commit to the running game and Ronnie Brown late in games the same way he did with Tomlinson.

More oppurtunities: Ronnie Brown has averaged just 16 carries in his career. All the elite backs in the NFL average between 20-25 carries a game. Tomlinson has averaged 22 carries a game throughout his career. Ronnie has to show he capable of enduring a heavier workload if he expects to have a breakout year this season, which I believe hell have no trouble accomplishing. Cameron's committed in unleashing Brown's full potential, thus under underutilizing a talent like Ronnie will not be an option.

Ted Ginn, Chris Chambers, David Martin: With true, speedy deep threats lined up at wide reviever and tight end, teams can no longer stack the box with running the risk of getting beat over the top. Having only seven defenders will allow more room to run and make plays. The more effective Ronnie runs the ball, the more vulnerable opposing teams will be to play action passes.

Improved Offensive Line and Fullback: With the announcement of Hadnot switching to right guard, this group has the talent to be a solid unit. Carey, Hadnot, Satele, and Shelton I am sold on as good starters, but the LG position is still a question. If this unit can attain some cohesiveness and continuity, they should be just fine. Corey Schlesichenger is a bruising fullback and one of the better ones in the leauge. This Unit should do a more than adequate job in opening up holes for Ronnie - more so than in years past.

All in all, in this offense I believe Ronnie is setup for his best season to date. Cam Cameron made L.T. the feature of the Chargers offense, and he plans to use the same formula with Brown in Miami. Now, lets not be naive - its unrealistic to think that Ronnie can put up the astronomical numbers that Tomlinson did last year. However keeping in mind his season averages which are:
  • 224 carries, 960 yards, at 4.3 ypc and 4.5 touchdowns, 30 rec, 1 touchdown
I firmly belive he will breakout this year with stats similar to the following:
  • 320 carries, 1300-1400 yards, 4.4ypc 12-14 touchdowns, 40 rec, 2 touchdowns

welcome ecko, glad you joined us. Nice post, well said, I'm kind of surprised the "Ronnie is a bust" crowd haven't seen this yet. I like your contensions, and that you backed them up. The only place I got twitchy was this;

Rest assured Cam will commit to the running game and Ronnie Brown late in games the same way he did with Tomlinson.

if you will recall, Cam went away from the run against the pats and it cost them the shot at the afc championship game.

again, well said, thanks!

God I hope so. The guy has all the talent in the world. I know he can do it, I just hope the offensive line stays consistent.

Not so sure he'll get 40 receptions considering the ball will be going around to chambers, booker, ginn, hagan and martin but i definitely think he will be used a lot more in the passing game then he has been in the past. I agree with you on 1300-1400 yards. I also hope he can get 12-14 tds on the ground and 2 through the air because that would be a HUGE improvement over last year, not only for him but for our whole offense.

he'll definetley get a ton of receptions IMO........ in his first 8 games his rookie year he had 32.... we havent gotten him the ball that much since... However there is Booker now as well. Hmm. Well I know he's gunna have a huge year barring injury.

The coaching staff was concerned about breaking down Ronnie Brown throughout the season by having him carry the ball too many times. That is another concern going into this season because I'm not so sure Lorenzo Booker can handle the pounding in the NFL for a full season even if he takes half the load off of Ronnie. I am personally questioning the release of Sammy Morris and allowing him to be the backup of a division rival.

Sammy Morris was also an excellent special teams player as well as a reliable backup RB.

Great thread, all Ronnies numbers so far point towards him becoming an elite back at some point.

I like the combo of Brown and Booker, we have 2 great athletes here that can catch the ball, both have great speed, the key will be the offensive line, we need to really work our linemen this offseason, i believe in Cam's system, what needs to happen is these guys need confidence (the whole offense) we needed this change bigtime, Cam knows how to bring the best out of his players, he supports them 100%, very positive nature unlike saban, i'm fired up just thinking about the possibilities that we may score some TD's this year!!

I firmly believe Ronnie Brown will breakout this year with stats similar to

I don't think he gets that many carries (yea its 20 a game, but I think he will average more like 18 to 19 carries a game), but I take those stats right now if I could . . . that would be a big time season for Ronnie . . . w/ throwing in his blocking ability on the pass protection as well.

I agree that it comes down to O-line. Many mediocre running backs look great behind great o-lines. Many talented running backs look lame behind bad o-lines. Ronnie Brown is a big, fast, powerful, back with great hands. If o-line is good, Ronnie will be awesome & Booker will be fun to watch.
