Offensive Future
Ronnie Brown is key to the Offense
Amidst all the buzz around Ted Ginn, some people may have forgotten that Ronnie Brown is going to be the focal point of Cameron's offense this coming season. Ronnie Brown envisions being used like Ladanian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers. He's been studying tons of tape on him and hopes to acheive some of the success that L.T. has enjoyed. Im both confident and optimstic that he can do so in Cam Cameron's offense. Why? Consider the following:
Committment to the Run: Anyone who watched the majority of the games last year knows very well that Mike Murlarkey consistently abandon the run late in games, even when Ronnie was averaging 4.8 yards a carry. In the Cheifs game it was 3rd and 1 and he called a double reverse which resulted in a fumble! We couldeve won at least 2 more games if we ran the ball more. Rest assured Cam will commit to the running game and Ronnie Brown late in games the same way he did with Tomlinson.
More oppurtunities: Ronnie Brown has averaged just 16 carries in his career. All the elite backs in the NFL average between 20-25 carries a game. Tomlinson has averaged 22 carries a game throughout his career. Ronnie has to show he capable of enduring a heavier workload if he expects to have a breakout year this season, which I believe hell have no trouble accomplishing. Cameron's committed in unleashing Brown's full potential, thus under underutilizing a talent like Ronnie will not be an option.
Ted Ginn, Chris Chambers, David Martin: With true, speedy deep threats lined up at wide reviever and tight end, teams can no longer stack the box with running the risk of getting beat over the top. Having only seven defenders will allow more room to run and make plays. The more effective Ronnie runs the ball, the more vulnerable opposing teams will be to play action passes.
Improved Offensive Line and Fullback: With the announcement of Hadnot switching to right guard, this group has the talent to be a solid unit. Carey, Hadnot, Satele, and Shelton I am sold on as good starters, but the LG position is still a question. If this unit can attain some cohesiveness and continuity, they should be just fine. Corey Schlesichenger is a bruising fullback and one of the better ones in the leauge. This Unit should do a more than adequate job in opening up holes for Ronnie - more so than in years past.
All in all, in this offense I believe Ronnie is setup for his best season to date. Cam Cameron made L.T. the feature of the Chargers offense, and he plans to use the same formula with Brown in Miami. Now, lets not be naive - its unrealistic to think that Ronnie can put up the astronomical numbers that Tomlinson did last year. However keeping in mind his season averages which are:
- 224 carries, 960 yards, at 4.3 ypc and 4.5 touchdowns, 30 rec, 1 touchdown
- 320 carries, 1300-1400 yards, 4.4ypc 12-14 touchdowns, 40 rec, 2 touchdowns
